Beyond the Drain: Tackling Anthropogenic Particle Pollution Sources to wastewater and biosolids across communities (Beyond TAPPS)
Beyond TAPPS is a multistate project focused on identifying and testing upstream interventions to reduce microplastic pollution entering coastal wastewater systems. Partnering with the tourism industry in Oregon and Washington, the project aims to install filters on commercial washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers in hotels to evaluate how effectively these interventions capture microplastics before they reach wastewater treatment plants and, ultimately, the ocean. The project also aims to assess how these interventions increase the fitness of two commercially important species, and help mitgate the effects of plastic pollution on coastal food webs. In addition, the Beyond TAPPS project includes an education-to-action component designed to raise awareness about microplastic pollution and inspire community engagement and behavior change.
Coastal tourism is vital to our communities, but its contribution to microplastic pollution threatens our coastal ecosystems.
