In 2007 when I was NCSS President, we established the First Timers Scholarship to enable teachers from diverse ethnic groups and/or who teach in high-poverty schools (and have never attended an NCSS conference) to take advantage of this premier professional development opportunity. I serve as the Scholarship co-chair. Since that time we have awarded a total of 755 scholarships totaling $218,000.
In 2020 applicants met the following requirements:
first time attendee at an NCSS conference
full-time preK-12 school teacher of social studies from across the United States and its territories.
Priority was given to applicants who:
have a diverse background and/or experience (A private donor provided scholarships for 25 Teachers of Color in 2020)
are in their first five years of teaching
are working in a high-poverty school
