A Public Humanities University Studies Capstone
Serving the community by supporting the work of under-resourced collections through student research and engagement projects
This community engagement/ public humanities capstone that has been undertaken by PSU students for almost 20 years, in which students undertake original research on locally housed objects and the local built environment. This research lets these works be better understood and utilized by members of our local community, but also the larger world of people coming to students' research through the web. Our students across the spectrum of majors have created remarkable resources that are shared on our Mukurtu-based database.
PSU students' research is showcased across the Medieval Portland website's database
Graphic Design student Dennis Reynolds created this flyer for Prof. McClanan to share at a community outreach event in March 2024 that had over 1400 attendees. It highlights the map capstone students created of local buildings with medieval inspiration.
Each student researches a topic developed with Prof McClanan that fits within the parameters of the overall project and also ideally connects with student interests. For example, a pre-med student is researching an early surgery manual at OHSU Special Collections and Japanese major is researching the medieval roots to the Zen garden at Portland's Japanese Garden. Other student projects synthesize and develop outreach materials such as a 2024 capstone student who is creating A Witches Guide to Medieval Portland.
