Funding and Other Resources
Successful applicants in 2026 and 2027 receive NRT funding for one calendar year based on a competitive awards process. Funding includes a $34,000 annual stipend, in-state level tuition for 9 credits in fall, winter and spring terms, and mandatory fees (approximately $15,000). NRT trainees have a dedicated office in a common space to facilitate effective transdisciplinary education and research.
Eligibility
NSF-NRT Funding is restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who have been admitted into a graduate program at Portland State University. During the academic year that students receive NRT-NSF funds, they are not allowed to work another full-time job and cannot have another position on the PSU campus.
Students can receive various sources of funding to support subsequent years in school. Students and their advisors are encouraged to pursue additional funding for subsequent years of graduate school e.g., their home department, scholarships, loans, graduate or teaching assistantships, etc. Regardless of funding, all admitted NRT program participants have the same course expectations and qualify to participate in all aspects of the program.
Anyone can apply to the NRT program for the two-year training, even if they do not seek NSF-NRT funding. Applicants must be either a doctoral student enrolled in the participating graduate program with no more than 2 years of their doctoral study completed, or apply to a relevant STEM master's degree for admission; students who have already completed one year of their master's degree by the time they apply to NRT are not eligible.
