Today, Robotics has become apart of 'Cutting Edge' technology. Getting into this area is difficult and most don't know where to start. PSU MCECS has a few courses in this field, however they require some pre-requisite knowledge. In order to prepare PSU student for these advancements in technology, the PSU Viking Robotics Society (VRS) was formed. VRS works to provide all PSU students with opportunities to learn about the field of Robotics through the use of hands-on projects, participation in competitions, and collaborations with PSU MCECS laboratories as well as external organizations local to the Portland Metro community.
After 2021, the VRS was disbanded and left behind.
Now, we are re-instated by SALP and are ready to have new members join our organization!
Please feel free to join our discord by clicking the VRS Circle Icon, as it will have our most recent updates and postings about our meetings and events.
The Viking Robotics Society focuses a majority of its energy toward designing and building robotics projects. These projects are student-led and aim bring about new robotics technology to PSU. Projects can be physical or virtual and range in application, meaning that realistically any PSU student can contribute in some form. Visit our projects page or GitHub to see what our members are currently working on!
Perhaps one of the most prevalent questions by student who want to learn Robotics is "Where do I get started?" Unfortunately there is no real straight forward answer. However, VRS members work to provide OPEN SOURCE resources that students can use to gain a basic understanding of Robotics. This gives our incoming members and PSU students an introduction to the field of Robotics.
The field of Robotics and the Robotics industry has numerous avenues, research, and applications in our world today. In order to inspire and provide a foundation for interest, VRS hosts a variety of community events that are open to all students and individuals or the Portland Metro community. These events can include RoboTalks (Seminars), RoboCompetition, Demo presentations, and other presentations by organizations or faculty members.
Viking Robotics Society strongly believes that a great way to learn about robotics is to participate in competitions to gain interest as well as curiosity in the field. VRS hosts its own robotics competitions for PSU students to participate in. The following are some of the Robotics competitions VRS hosts:
RoboDuels
RoboBattle
Robot Agility Course Challenge (RACC)
Robot Soccer
VRS looks to provide students with learning opportunities in the field of Robotics. We utilize hands-on student-led robotics projects, free online resources, and host community robotics-based events in order for students to learn about Robotics.
VRS truly believes in Open Source technology, specifically open source robotics projects. VRS has its own GitHub where anyone can see what robotics projects we have and are currently working on. Project files are freely available to download.
Innovation and problem solving are the foundations for advanced technology. VRS members encourage its members to seek out problems and developing innovative robotics solutions. As a result students have the opportunity to work on innovative robotics projects.
