Neurolinguistics Lab

Welcome to the Neurolinguistics Laboratory at Portland State University!

Individuals who sustain brain injuries can have a wide variety of complex, cognitive and linguistic changes related to their injury.

Our lab study goal is to understand the connection between neural systems and language processing and cognition. We have interest in methods that include electrophysiological (ERP/EEG), reaction time, and behavioral methods.

Current Projects

Sentence Processing & TBI: The aim of this project is to assess the effects of TBI on complex sentence processing and how sentence processing relates to mood and cognitive performance.

Emoji Study: The goal of the emoji study is to determine if adding emojis in a sentence will decrease the reaction time for ambiguous sentences. We seek to understand the relationship emojis have on sentence comprehension and cognition.

AGL: The AGL project examines how people with aphasia learn adjacent dependencies (in AGL) and those results are compared with their ability to process local relationships in natural language. Implications of this study include a broader understanding of grammar-learning and sequencing, and inform future therapeutic techniques for individuals with aphasia.

GOAL (Greater Outcomes in Academic Learning) Clinic: The aim of this project is to provide academic, personal, and professional support for individuals experiencing executive function deficits through a dynamic coaching model.

The TBI Justice Project: This project is collecting information from Portland teachers, school administrators, and speech-language pathologists about their knowledge of TBI and its connection to behavior changes such as decision making and executive functioning. The goal is to learn how to better support TBI survivors in the schools.

Friends of TBI Project: The Friends Program for Brain Injury Survivors pairs trained student volunteers with TBI survivors to provide opportunities to practice and refine social skills through establishing friendships.
