This rubric video is for you, the students and the judges so that everyone is on one page and has the same information...or at least should have questions about the same thing 😂.

In an effort to more properly and appropriately serve our second largest language community here at Oregon MESA, as well as mitigate linguistic segregation of this population, I decided to create a bilingual video. If there are any questions, comments or concerns pleases email me: jhudnall@pdx.edu

Event Overview

Demo Day is a showcase for students in MESA to present their projects to the community. Think of Demo Day like midterms and MESA Day like finals.

Teams (2-4 students) will showcase their designs using their prototype, poster, and any other visual aids they can or have. Demo Day guests will visit teams at their tables and listen to a pitch about the design of their invention and how it meets the needs of their clients.

The pitch competition is part of Demo Day but is optional to participate. Every student will have the opportunity to talk with judges for project feedback, but they can opt out of getting scored if they do not wish to compete for an award.

Each team will have part of a table to display their items. Electricity can be provided if teams let us know ahead of time that it's needed.

Teams will be responsible for finding their own transportation to Demo Day. Advisors can work with parents and/or teams from other nearby schools to arrange a carpool. If your team experiences major barriers to obtaining transportation, please let us know as soon as possible.

Advisors will register competing AND showcasing students using this jotform. Elementary Advisors will use this jotform.

*Note: OPTING OUT of competing means they will receive feedback ONLY, NOT a score. Students are encouraged to come to their respective Demo Days regardless of if they have anything to show*

Teams have a preferred language they want to present in other than English

*EQUITY NOTICE* Exclusively use this rubric ONLY in the classroom. Do NOT allow this rubric to be accessible to students outside of the class/MESA meetings. Doing so can lead to highlighting the very thing MESA is trying to remedy; systemic privilege's of some students at the expense of others.

Ex: Some students may not have parents, time, language ability (apart from Spanish/English but STEAM language vs business language vs government language etc.), and numerous other resources that can give them extra boost or 'leg up' that could help them outside of MESA meetings.
