The Historical Association in London has created a 148 publication, available free online, on Exploring and Teaching Medieval History in Schools. It is oriented to the curriculum of English schools but may be of wider interest. One of the main topics addressed in the pdf is how to use primary sources effectively in teaching the medieval period, but it also has sections on topics such as common misconceptions about the period, etc.
