Hello! Thank you for your interest in viewing the data from the project: “Understanding the mediating role of engagement in active learning outcomes through discourse analysis”. This work is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 2120843. Please read the following information, which provides additional details regarding available files, file types, and naming conventions.
What files can I expect to find in these folders?
For each time of data collection and for each group, you will find video and audio files, transcription documents, completed activity worksheets for participants, blank activity worksheets, activity worksheet solutions, and a description catalog to match the participants to their pseudonyms for each activity.
What should I consider when accessing the files?
Some of the activity groups during each term and activity will contain multiple camera angles. When reading the descriptor catalog, you may need to access both camera angles to match participants in the videos to their pseudonym descriptors.
One transcription file is present in each folder for each group (Group A, B, etc.) with its respective video and audio files. Due to video and audio file editing, there are delays in the timestamps listed on the transcription and the video or audio file.
Some video files may have poor audio quality or no audio present. Separate audio files are easily accessible within each folder to pair with its respective video file for those video files that do not contain audio or that contain poor audio quality.
There are several file types and supporting documents within each folder. Naming conventions for the possible file types you will find are listed below.
Activities:
MP – Molecular Polarity
PT – Periodic Trends
SD – Solutions and Dilutions
Instructors & Available Time of Data Collection:
*Data collection occurred over three times (i.e., 1, 2, and 3) in two instructors’ courses (i.e., Instructor Y and Instructor Z). The two instructors did not have data collection occur over all three times. Therefore, the times of data collection for each instructor’s course is listed below.
Instructor Y – Times 2 and 3
Instructor Z – Times 1 and 2
Group Names:
*Multiple groups’ names will be titled as either Group A or Group B. Note that membership for a student in a particular group does not carry over across instructors or activities (although in some cases, the same students may appear). For example, students in Group A for SD2 – Z may not be the same students in Group A for PT2 – Z. Additionally, students in Group B for PT2 – Y are not the same students in Group B for PT2 – Z. The shorthand version for group names is listed below.
GRP_A – Group A
GRP_B – Group B
Naming Conventions for Group Activity Visual Recordings:
*Some groups’ activity recording files contain two camera views. Both camera views may be helpful to access when identifying each student based on their pseudonym and respective descriptor. If there are two camera views available within a folder, one activity recording name will contain the label ‘C1’, and the second activity recording name will contain the label ‘C2’.
ACTIVITY+TIME_INSTRUCTOR _GROUP_ CAMERA VIEW (if applicable)
For example:
SD2_Y_GRP_A_C2
This is the video file for the Solutions and Dilutions Activity during Time 2 (SD2) of data collection in Instructor Y’s class (Y) for Group A (GRP_A) with the second camera view (C2).
Naming Conventions for Group Activity Audio Recordings:
ACTIVITY+TIME_INSTRUCTOR_ GROUP_AUDIO
For example:
PT3_Y_GRP_A_AUDIO
This is the audio file for the Periodic Trends activity during Time 3 (PT3) of data collection in Instructor Y’s class (Y) for Group A (GRP_A).
Naming Conventions for Written Artifacts:
ACTIVITY+TIME_INSTRUCTOR__GROUP_WRITTEN_PSEUDONYM
For example:
MP1_Z_GRP_B_WRITTEN_ANDREW
This refers to the Molecular Polarity activity worksheet during Time 1 (MP1) of data collection in Instructor Z’s class (Z) for Andrew from Group B.
Naming Conventions for Blank Activity Worksheet:
ACTIVITY+TIME_BLANK_ACTIVITY_WS
For example:
PT1_BLANK_ACTIVITY_WS
This is the blank activity worksheet for the Molecular Polarity activity during Time 1 (PT1) of data collection.
Naming Conventions for Activity Worksheet Solutions:
ACTIVITY+TIME_ACTIVITY_WS_KEY
For example:
PT1_ACTIVITY_WS_KEY
This is the activity worksheet key for the Molecular Polarity activity during Time 1 of data collection.
Naming Conventions for Audio Transcripts:
ACTIVITY+TIME_INSTRUCTOR_GROUP_TRANSCRIPT
For example:
SD2_Y _GRP_B_TRANSCRIPT
This refers to the audio transcript from the Solutions and Dilutions activity during Time 2 of data collection for Group B in Instructor Z’s class.
Pseudonym Descriptor Catalogs:
For each group in every activity, term, and instructor’s course, participants are given pseudonyms. “Pseudonym Descriptor Catalogs” are files containing clothing, hair, and/or accessory descriptors for each participant matched with their pseudonyms to ensure accurate match-up of each participant in the video recordings to their pseudonyms in the audio transcript documents. For a given activity in each instructor’s course during each term, a pseudonym descriptor catalog is available for each group, which contains descriptors for all groups’ participants.
Naming Conventions for Pseudonym Descriptor Catalog:
ACTIVITY+TIME_INSTRUCTOR _GRP_PSUEDONYM_DESCRIPTION
For example:
MP1_Z_GRP_A_ PSUEDONYM_DESCRIPTION
This is the file for the Molecular Polarity activity during Time 1 of data collection containing participant descriptors for Group A in Instructor Z’s class.
