In order to ensure the best possible educational experience for ALL students in the program, and to maintain the facilities in Shattuck Hall in the best condition now and into the future, all students are expected to agree to the following code of conduct.
Students will visit the School of Architecture Online Resource Guide for Students (ORGS) and will follow its directives.
Students understand that the 3rd Floor of Shattuck Hall is a single studio space shared by all students taking studio and that their 24-hour access to a workstation is a privilege they risk losing if they break any part of the code of conduct.
Students will always respect the expectation of their studio colleagues to have a clean, safe, prejudice-free work environment at all times. This includes being responsive to a fair and equitable workspace allowance, and refraining from employing toxic materials and power tools of any type, especially those that pollute the studio environment with chemicals, dust and noise.
Students will never prop open a door to the 3rd Floor studio space.
Students will never employ a technique or execute a task that permanently damages the physical fabric of the building or its furnishings, including any spray medium (e.g., spray paint, fixative or adhesive). Students understand that if they do so they will face PSU disciplinary procedures, and will be responsible for the cost of repair or replacement. For example:
Students will always use a cutting mat when cutting materials.
Students will always dispose of used cutting blades in the ‘sharps’ container provided.
Students will never use the sinks, WCs or drinking fountains for disposing of any toxic products such as oil- or solvent-based fluids, or for cleaning any equipment that has been used with these substances, or with concrete, plaster or other casting materials.
Students will never deliberately damage, remove or discard a studio colleague’s work, or the work of guests whose exhibition the School is hosting.
Students will always place recyclable materials in the appropriate recycling container and will refrain from using any materials that are non-recyclable, non-reusable, toxic or otherwise known to be harmful to the environment. Students will abide by the School’s published list of excluded materials.
Students will always participate willingly and effectively in 3rd Floor cleaning regimes as determined by the School and directed by faculty and staff.
In using the Student Resource Room (SH 354-the kitchen), students will always follow the rules and procedures for cleaning determined by the School.
Students will participate in community-building and maintenance activities scheduled for their studio class, including attending Fridays@1 gatherings, and cleaning the student kitchen, as directed by faculty, staff and student body liaison.
Students will never smoke or ignite any flame on the roof terrace and will be fully aware that the insulation material under the paving slabs to the terrace is highly flammable.
Students will never camp overnight in any part of Shattuck Hall.
Students will never climb onto the main part of the roof beyond the roof terrace.
Students understand that possession or use of alcohol on campus is prohibited, and will never bring alcohol or mood-altering substances into Shattuck Hall.
Students will never bring their bicycle into the building or ride any wheeled recreational device in the building.
Students will never bring a refrigerator into the 3rd Floor studio.
Students will never use an electrical extension cord and will only use S-approved surge-protecting devices.
Students understand that the studio is a working environment and not a place for recreational or leisure activities. While in the studio, students will refrain from engaging in non-work-related activities.
Students understand that children are not permitted in the studios in Shattuck Hall, except for exigent circumstances and by approval of the professor overseeing the studio and the Director. Students will be asked to remove any disruptive child(ren). Supervised children are permitted in other parts of Shattuck Hall.
