With my injury, I wasn't able to return my rental bike by biking it to the shop. A cab was pricey, so I hobbled my bike over on the handy train and made It back to the shop In time to return It!
I rented a wheelchair to get around since traveling by crutches just slowed everyone down. It was an interesting experience - many streets were unpaved, lacked curb cuts and ramps, and the ped crossing times did not give me enough time to cross with ease.
Here's someone casually transporting two full-size beds by cargo bike. Among other crazy things I saw people carry on bike in Copenhagen were an air conditioner, an IKEA haul, and the biggest dog I've ever seen.

The city showcased bike parking installations that effectively demonstrated the contrast of space occupied by cars vs bikes.
The amount of bikes parked In this mobility hub was astonishing - especially since most of the city is away on summer holiday.
Lars Ekman from the Swedish Transportation Authority presented Sweden's inventive approaches towards Vision Zero, including the implementation of regulations mandating safe drivers in businesses and corporations.

While the class went on a trip to Aarhus and Aalborg for a few days, I stayed behind to go to the doctor for my knee injury. But it wasn't too bad. The medical system in Copenhagen is quite different from back home. The waiting room had phone charging stations, recliner chairs, great service, and best of all - the visit was $Free!
With all my downtime, I was able to explore the city on crutches. The streets aren't the most accessible with all the cobblestones and stairs, but I'd tackle any terrain for some traditional smørrebrød ... and wine.
With no class in session and everyone gone, I had the opportunity to sit down, relax, and paint at the Botanical Garden. Note: I didn't have all of my watercolor paint supplies so this is not my best work. Don't judge!

This was the coolest car park ever! I've admired this building from afar since I first saw it in the book The Ideal City. The design is by JAJA Architects, who recently designed the new M5 transit stop using biophilic design principles.
The adult playground includes, swings, trampolines, and this climbing spiral. I'd love to see more of these, particularly in park-poor neighborhoods in America.
I was having the time of my life jumping on the rooftop trampoline... until I injured myself (tore my ACL) and ruined the rest of my Denmark trip. Note to the reader/future visitor of this park: jump at your own risk!

It was interesting to hear that graffiti culture in Denmark's public parks is not looked down upon. It's important for livable communities as a symbol of ownership and community voice.
My favorite public space in Copenhagen is Reffen, an outdoor food hall in Holmen. The selection and quality of food vendors was delightful. I appreciated the ample amount of space and seating for eating, drinking lingering, and enjoying the sunset. I had a great time getting to know my classmates at "the beach!"
I recently worked on the community engagement for downtown Portland's O'Bryant Square Park, which will be demolished this year without a future plan for its design. Many of the design elements from Superkilen Park would work well, such as bright colors, joyful street furniture, and community services.

My bike made it through the 16 mile tour - she deserved to stop and smell the flowers.
This playground where kids can learn all about bike safety and the rules of the road was my favorite part of the tour. Wish I had this as a kid!
"If more racks zig-zagged, then more people would zoom-zoom on bikes." - Me, deliriously writing this after riding 22+ miles today.

Margo Fredericks at Copenhagen Metro is working at the intersection of biophilic design and transportation. Incredibly inspiring!
Say Yes to All Opportunities. If I ever get the chance to work in New Zealand, I'll take It. Thanks for the pro tip, Niels Hoe from 360 Consulting!
A whole train car dedicated to bicycles.

Caravan of a pregnant woman with three children. Now that's what I call a Stress-Free Bike Network!
So many stylish outfits on the bike lane – no athleisure wear to be found!
No big deal. Just public toilets all over the city. This one in the Rosenberg Garden.

I'm excited to go on this trip to expand my knowledge in sustainable transportation as both a personal interest and for the relevance it holds to my career in transportation planning. I am passionate about urban design, equity, and improving walking, biking, and transit experiences for historically marginalized communities. Living in a bike- and transit-friendly city is a new experience for me and I feel there is room for deeper understanding through praxis surrounding topics such as wayfinding, traffic-calming measures, bicycle network design, and initiatives to increase multimodal trips. The opportunity to learn from experts in Denmark and Sweden will provide me with enhanced qualifications to work on more active transportation projects and inspire me to think boldly for communities in Oregon and beyond.
