Blended Learning Models

Blended learning models

Blended learning can be delivered through a range of different approaches. The balance between face-to-face and online components will depend on the curriculum, learning outcomes, learners’ needs and prior experiences, teacher competence and confidence and access to digital technologies/ reliable internet.

The majority of blended-learning programmes resemble one of four models: Rotation, Flex, À La Carte, and Enriched Virtual. The Rotation model includes four sub-models: Station Rotation, Lab Rotation, Flipped Classroom and Individual Rotation (Christensen et al., 2013; Horn and Staker, 2014; Powell et al., 2015).

Flipped Classroom model, Enriched Virtual model and Station Rotation model

Having reviewed each of the blended models, this interactive resource will focus on the Flipped Classroom model, the Enriched Virtual model and the Station Rotation model of blended learning as these three models facilitate learning to take place both within the classroom (on either a daily or less regular basis depending on context) and at home.
