What caused your hearing loss and when did this happen?

I have no idea what caused my hearing loss. I come from a family with many members who are Deaf or hard of hearing. My parents are Deaf and my sister (Sana) is hard of hearing. I was born in Pakistan and my doctor there could not identify the cause of my hearing loss. I am not sure whether it is hereditary or if my hearing loss progressed over the years as a result of something else.

I know that I went deaf in both ears when I was a baby. For this reason, my parents decided to move to the United States to make sure that my sisters and I received the best education possible. In New York, we went to a conference that taught us about cochlear implants and that's when I knew I had to get one.

Since getting my cochlear implant, I have been able to hear and speak. It is amazing and I am really grateful to my parents. I hope to visit my family members in Pakistan this summer after almost ten years of being away!
