Math games embed fundamental mathematical concepts. They are real life connections between the curriculum and a learner’s interest. Math games foster strategic mathematical thinking when children try different strategies. Games also provide opportunities to build on mathematical understanding and reasoning happening at school.

When we observe children playing games, we listen to their mathematical conversations, notice and name the strategies, and note how students record their thinking. As teachers (and parents) we can use this information to challenge, extend, and respond to each student in order to increase their mathematical understanding. The games shared on this site are chosen to support mathematical understanding of number and fluency of operations.
