After conducting a survey of students at MRPS we found that the majority of them is not aware of the clothing industry's use of water to make their clothing. So, we decided to create a website to inform our community about the Fashion industry's use of this valuable resource.
Our main goal is to educate our schoolmates and community:
○ about how their clothing choices contribute to water consumption and
○ raise awareness for a lifestyle change
In this website, you will explore how the clothes you wear contribute to the depletion of our water resources. We will also help you figure out how to make more informed choices when you purchase your next item of clothing. And even calculate how much water is used to produce your clothing and also your water intake!
WATER IS LIFE
Since the beginning of time, people including the First Nations have relied on water to survive, which gives it its importance. However, there is a much deeper meaning to water which is why it is important. Through the Indigenous eyes in Canada, and in many other cultures, water is looked at as sacred and a resource that shouldn’t be wasted.
Water is the thing that cleanses us, keeps us sustained, and 60% of what were are made out of.
There are many physical, social and spiritual reasons as to why water is important.
Will you help us protect it?
It takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt, and globally, the world uses 5,000,000,000,000 litres of water annually for fabric dyeing
It is estimated that the Fashion industry uses 93,000,000,000 cubic meters of water annually
Producing a single pair of jeans from your favourite clothing brand can produce greenhouse gasses, and on average takes 3,781 litres of water to produce (three days worth of a household's water needs)
Approximately 90% of fast fashion companies contribute directly to water pollution
It takes about 2,700 litres of water to make just one t-shirt , which is enough water for one person to drink for 900 days
Every day, the want for cheaper clothes grows larger, which leads to greater harm and greater misuse of our water.
However, in recent years, programs and organizations have formed, drawing attention to these matters with goals to make a change for the better, especially during the covid-19 pandemic which also had a huge impact on the fashion industry.
For example, we weren't able to get as much leather from Bangladesh because of Covid-19, and we also used more of our resources and materials creating COVID-friendy items such as masks.
The fashion world is now looking for high-quality sustainable clothing to sell to consumers.
As of now, there is a growing appetite for sustainable clothing, since more people are trying to make a lifestyle change to better our environment and use the resources we have access to.
Business models in the fashion industry are quickly adapting to this change, since many material importers were held back due to covid and other factors.
For example, clothes from Africa are fast becoming the new rage for sustainable wear.
Do you want to make your own contribution? You alone can to a lot to encourage and be a part of this change, starting at your home.
Use the calculator below to find out how much water you take up in terms of one of the articles of clothing:
To calculate take any of the articles of clothing and how much water they take, and multiply it by the number of that article of clothing you have.
Example: If I have 30 cotton t-shirts, I would do 30 x 2 700 = 81,000
Therefore, in order to create all 30 cotton t-shirts they took about 81,000 L of water.
