School  Newsletter

  24th January 2024

Dear Parents,

Many thanks to all the parents who are now supporting the school, I regularly  see parents in the school library helping and classifying books. This is such an important part of the school, many thanks for all of this support in this area. We also have a number of parents offering to help around the school with a number of future events, we do appreciate your support.

HSSE- An update from last week and the scooter incidents. We had 4 incidents reported last week, 3 scooter incidents and one bicycle incident, all the students received grazes or minor injuries, they were attended to by the school nurse.

As highlighted last week we would encourage all parents to discuss their child's journey to school, and how to mange conditions that are inconsistent e.g. water/uneven services/ dogs cats on the footpaths. We will also continue to follow up in school; in our Whole School Assembly last week we reiterated the use of helmets and walking with bikes and scooters when using crossings, your support at home with these key points is appreciated.

Can I please remind parents to support the school in ensuring children arrive in school ready for the school day. If your child arrives late then it will impact on their learning as they have missed a key part of the day.  However, we do understand  that events can happen outside of our control and we do not want children or parents rushing to make the start of the day.

And finally, a positive story on Collaboration and Communication in our school community. An abandoned dog was discovered outside school last week, the dog was in a storm drain and was unable to exit from the drain. Several members of school staff supported in recovering the dog and made sure he received the correct medical care and attention. Many thanks to all who were involved  and in demonstrating such a caring attitude.

Early Years Dentist Visit

Children in Early Years have been learning all about taking care of basic hygiene and personal needs as part of their IEYC Unit, 'Healthy Habits'.  We had a visit from Dr. Naeema Mohammed Al Bulushi, a dentist and lecturer from Oman College of Health Sciences.  Children from Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception engaged in a range of playful activities to extend their knowledge and understanding of how to keep their teeth healthy through eating healthy foods and limiting sugar intake, as well as the skills of brushing their teeth.  Dr. Naeema had some wonderful resources, such as the soft toys with realistic teeth that the children could brush.  Another big hit was the set of large teeth and torches which were used to explain the different surfaces of the teeth that need to be brushed as well as counting the number of teeth we have.  The children also received a goody bag as a souvenir of the day.  Many thanks to Dr. Naeema for her visit and to Nurse Munira for arranging it.

Milepost 1

Our Milepost 1 IPC topic this term is "If you're happy and you know it".  During our knowledge harvest at the beginning of the unit, children mentioned that 'relaxing' was linked to wellbeing. We decided to investigate this further. Thank you to Mrs. Pim, Yoga Teacher and Sound Healer, for visiting our school and introducing us to Himalayan Singing Bowls. We learned that it is possible to see, hear and feel sound through vibrations. Standing in the largest bowl while Mrs. Pim used the mallet to create sound and was a firm favourite.

Milepost 2

In Milepost 2, we have been exploring various feelings and emotions. We have been introduced to a helpful tool called 'The Zones of Regulation', which assists us in understanding and managing our emotions by classifying them into different "zones". The blue zone represents feelings such as sadness or tiredness, the green zone signifies calmness and concentration, the yellow zone represents excitement or anxiety, and the red zone represents anger or distress. This tool teaches us to identify our emotions and select appropriate strategies to regulate and express them in a positive manner. Year 3 and 4 students have been identifying their own triggers and learning strategies to help them return to the green zone.

Milepost 3 - Making Wellbeing a priority

'It's relaxing and peaceful.'

'It makes me feel calm, but also it's fun.'

'I like the mindful colouring; it's relaxing and you get to be creative.'

'I wish there were more space to enjoy!'

This is just some of the positive feedback from the MP3 students about the wellbeing space that we have developed. The students especially enjoy accessing it to enjoy some respite after playing outside at lunch and it has proved to be a wonderful shared space that allows children to develop friendships and avail opportunities to collaborate across the milepost.

Computing

Linking with MP3's IPC topic, 'Express Yourselves' Year 5 coded emotion badges to display on their Micro:bits, using the buttons to switch between 3 emotions. Once coded, they added/created music that expressed each emotion. The children downloaded their files to their Micro:bits then connected their microbit to their headphones via crocodile clips so they could listen to their music whilst viewing each emotion.

How does IPC test children to learn facts?

The IPC has three core components that underpin each unit of study: knowledge, skills and understanding. Harnessing the brain’s natural preconditions for learning, our thematic approach allows students to create meaningful connections between different strands of knowledge which effectuates the consolidation of facts. Moreover, at PDO School, we initiate each academic year with a reinduction into learning through our Brainwave unit. The first week of school is dedicated to developing strategies that support the memorization of facts and the effective transference of knowledge to long-term memory.

Mission 1: Playground Games

UN Goal 17# In Action

Fostering collaboration, our committed Student Council Champions have played a key role in improving the school playground by introducing exciting and engaging games. Their joint efforts align with the school's mission, emphasising the importance of partnerships and shared goals. Through this initiative, we aim not only to encourage enjoyable and active play but also to instil the values of teamwork and cooperation, creating a lively and inclusive school environment.

Library update

Our team of library volunteers have now re-organised all the fiction categories and created a new 'favourite author' section. If anybody would like to volunteer some of their time in the library to help with organisation, new initiatives or to listen to reading, please do contact Miss Amy or our library parent lead, Shalini. Thank you to the library team for your support so far this term.
