School  Newsletter

  27th March 2024

Dear Parents,

As we near the end of Term 2, I now reflect on how we have moved forward as a school in the last 8 months. While we have a number of areas to celebrate, it is a positive to highlight the stronger presence of parents visiting and supporting the school. When I cast my mind back to August, we had limited parent interactions, I think we can all now see the difference in parental engagement. To see parents working in partnership with school is a positive.

Many thanks to all the parents who attended the Maths workshops last week, it was wonderful to see the children confidently explaining the strategies to parents. Many thanks for all the feedback which was very supportive, we can see that you are requesting more of these events and as we move forward as a school we will continue to develop more parent engagements across the curriculum.

See some of the positive comments about the maths workshops below.

'It was impressive to hear all the children explaining their methods'

'I think the students did a brilliant job in explaining the maths strategies'

'Great initiative'

'The workshop was excellent.'

'It was perfect and no further suggestions to improve'

'Excellent delivery from an enthusiastic teacher'

'Fantastic experience'

We also received some comments relating to the need for more of these events and a few other development areas, which we of course will incorporate into future plans where appropriate. Many thanks for all of the feedback.

As we finish this term I would like to thank you all for your support and commitment to our school.

We are now in the process of planning for the next academic year.

During this term we have interviewed 39 candidates for roles in the school, these include internal leadership positions, Learning Support Assistants, and Teachers. When Claire and I arrived last year, we largely inherited a school structure that was already established, after 8 months we are able to see the changes that will be required for when we start the new term in August. While we have made a number of changes this year with policies and initiatives, that have all impacted on the school and learning; we feel the changes we are planning now in staffing and school structure will have a deeper impact on the learning and provision that PDO school offers. We will of course update you across next term.

A reminder that the school closes at 12.00 today.

That just leaves me to wish you all a relaxing break with friends and family over this holiday period.

Road Safety

The Lifesaving Power of Car seats

Our top priority at PDO is keeping our children safe. One of the most important ways we can keep children safe is by making sure they are safe when travelling in vehicles. It's vital that we protect our children by making sure they're properly secured in a car seat, everytime they travel in a car. We need your help with this. Follow these simple steps to make road safety a priority every time you travel.

1. Buckle-Up Every Time

Whether it's a quick trip to the store or a longer journey, always buckle your child into their car seat before driving. Seat belts save lives!

 2. Choose the Right Seat

Make sure your child's car seat is appropriate for their age, weight, and height. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installation and use.

3. Double-Check Installation

Take a moment to double-check that the car seat is securely installed in your vehicle. Tighten straps and harnesses to ensure a snug fit.

4. Rear-Facing is Best

For infants and young children, rear-facing car seats provide the best protection. Keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible, following the recommendations of safety experts.

5. Don't Rush Transitions

Resist the urge to move your child to the next stage of car seat too soon. Each stage offers specific protections tailored to your child's size and developmental stage.

6. Lead by Example

Set a positive example for your child by always wearing your seat belt and obeying traffic laws. They learn from watching you!

Early Years

This week, the children immersed into creativity, making a menu for their alien friends and then decorating with aluminum foil for our upcoming Alien party. Alongside a variety of art tools, the children experimented with colouring pasta and modelling playdough, adding texture to their creations.  They put their imaginations to work, whipping up colourful smoothies and unique pizzas too. Through engaging in these activities, they expressed ideas, worked together and demonstrated collaboration.

Great team work!

Milepost 1

Year 1 invited the Reception class to visit their 'Green Fingers' Exit Point.  We explained the stages to plant a seed. There were plenty of great collaborators with amazing communication skills. We used the Continuous Provision area to write instructions. Year 1 then completed a thank you card for their partner with notes on how to look after their plant.

Year 2

The parents of Year 2 became part of Year 2's protest as an introduction to their exit point for the IPC Topic of Greenfingers.  The children took parents on a learning journey of the magical qualities of plants, sharing their knowledge and understanding!  The children taught their visitors to dissect seeds and asked them to make predictions.  The children taught their parents to put together parts of a plant, completed a wordsearch, shared their work and their was a competitive but friendly quiz between the year groups - Well done to Hana (2A), Joseph (2H) and Tymon (2H) and their parents(!) for being the top 3 competitors.

Milepost 2

On Wednesday, Year 3 celebrated the end of their learning journey within Island Life with an Exit Point. Through this unit, the children have acquired a range of geographical knowledge and skills. They've developed the art of map interpretation, proficiently navigating grid references, and confidently utilizing the cardinal points of the compass to provide and follow directions.

However, it has been the Science and International learning that has truly captured the children’s interest. Through these subjects, they have learned about the impact of plastic pollution on marine life and ways to take action against it. During the Exit Point, the parents and children worked collaboratively to design reusable bags that will help to spread the message: PROTECT OUR OCEANS! Year 3s are eager to take their bags and posters on their forthcoming holidays, ensuring that their message is seen around the world. Well done, Year 3. What amazing global citizens!

BREAKING NEWS...

This week, Year 5 added the finishing touches to their news broadcast. The incident they are reporting on is a re-enactment from a chapter in our class book; The Boy at the Back of the Class. Whilst preparing their scripts, the children reflected on their use of language, witness selection and questioning in order to demonstrate their understanding of media bias versus honest reporting. Using a green screen and Canva, the children edited their videos to emulate a real-life broadcast.

Art - Year 1 & 2 Insects

The children in Year 1 and 2 have had a fantastic time creating their wonderful insects. They experimented with watercolour and ink over oil pastel drawings as well as a new little trick using hand sanitiser and cotton buds. After adding wings and legs for the final touches, I think we can all appreciate that all of their hard work has paid off!

Well done, Year 1 and 2!

Wellbeing update

Over the course of this term, as a school, we have increased our focus on wellbeing. Through our IC units the children learned about their own wellbeing and looking after and being aware of their own mental health. As an additional layer, we work closely with the PDO clinic to include the support of external professionals to guide us on our wellbeing journey. These professionals are all highly qualified and have all been approved by PDO. If you would like more information on these initiatives please connect with Ms Anre or your child's class teacher.

NEW HOUSE NAMES

Today we marked the launch of our new house names to replace the old red, yellow, green and blue house. Our new names represent the world around us and each come with their own unique symbol. This is part of a greater emphasis on the house teams which is linked to a new rewards system to celebrate and encourage the behaviours and attributes that we like to emphasise here at PDO School.

Class teachers will be awarding points based on the following areas:

*Extra Housepoints awarded when personal goals are witnessed outside of the classroom.

We look forward to sharing further developments with our house system in the near future.

INTERHOUSE

This week we held our final interhouse event of the term which was the infamous 'TUG OF WAR' for years 3-6 and Target Wars for years 1&2. The Tug of War was highly competitive with the games lasting much longer than expected with a matching of strength and determination making it very close.

Our Target Wars game was a demonstration of skill, accuracy and concentration. The year 1's and 2's aiming their bean bags towards a target to see which house was the closest. It was again very tight with the ruler coming out on a few occasions to measure who was closest. Well done to everyone who took part and also to our over all champions - WIND!

WIND - 60 POINTS

FIRE - 48 POINTS

EARTH - 46 POINTS

WATER - 36 POINTS

Swimming Fun

For our last lesson of the term our classes took part in some pools games - giant team kickboard challenges, water polo, underwater slalom and the walking on water challenge which is always very popular.  We have moved our swim assessments to Term 3 when everyone is swimming again. There has been some great progress this term and we look forward to celebrating this with our STA School Swimming Academy Certificates next term.

Early Years - Swimming Fun

Our Nursery and Reception students had a great time during our introduction to swimming sessions this week! It was fantastic to see them enjoying themselves and gaining confidence in the water. We look forward to more swimming lessons in Term 3.

French

This half term in Milepost 3, the children have been focusing on improving their speaking skills in French by developing accurate pronunciation and intonation and presenting their learning to an audience.   To achieve these objectives in a fun and creative way the children worked collaboratively to plan, practice, design and make their own puppet show linked to the book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See? by Eric Carle.  This week, after all their hard work over the last few weeks, each class performed their puppet show to a different class in Early Years or Milepost 1.  I am so proud of what they have all achieved and how they have all demonstrated their personal goals throughout. Bravo!
