A rather truncated week due to the adverse weather conditions this week, hopefully a return to normal learning tomorrow. Many thanks to the whole community for the resilience demonstrated this week.
If you arrive through the main school building entrance you will now see several banners that represent the learning principles in our school. Several of these definitions were stakeholder created - student, teacher and parents all contributed to the definitions. Hopefully, you will also notice additional information on the IEYC and the IPC. The banners and the UN SDGs highlight the key learning areas for our school.

This project allowed the children to develop the Personal Goal of empathy by understanding and caring for wildlife. They explored the characteristics and habitats of giraffes and zebras, learning about the importance of conservation and the need to protect animals. By focusing on empathy towards wildlife, the children valued the feelings of others and developed a deeper connection to the environment. The activity aligned with the goal of promoting decent work and economic growth (Sustainable Development Goal 8) as they appreciated the roles of people who help protect wildlife. They engaged in various activities that enhanced their creativity, collaboration and awareness of the natural world.
This week, Milepost 1 has shown fantastic resilience when adapting to online learning, and we’re proud of how they've embraced new challenges. As part of our international learning, students have also been discovering wellness practices from around the world. A huge thank you to parents for your continued support and feedback—we couldn't have done it without you!
Our budding geologists have been diving deep into the structure of our planet in IPC this week!

Year 3 developed their understanding of Earth’s layers by creating their own 3D models, complete with an inner core, outer core, mantle, crust, oceans, and continents. These hands-on creations have been an exciting way for the children to visualise what lies beneath our feet.
Next, we’re going to cut the models in half, revealing a cross section that will provide a clear, visual representation of the layers of the Earth. This activity helps reinforce their knowledge and gives them a tangible way to explain their understanding of the Earth’s structure.
Year 5 Cinema Trip - The Wild Robot
Read more
This week, Year 5 traded the classroom for the silver screen at Vox Cinema in the City Centre, diving into the world of "The Wild Robot". As we settled into our seats, the excitement was palpable. The film brought to life our IPC topic and novel, showcasing how our robotic heroine adapts to survive and thrive in the wild, making friends with quirky animals and facing nature’s challenges. Laughter echoed and gasps of awe filled the air as we cheered on our new robotic pal. After the film finished, we couldn’t help but chat about how the ability to adapt applies not just to robots, or animals living in extreme environments, but to all of us.
It was a day filled with fun, friendship, and a bit of popcorn—definitely a trip to remember!
This term Year 6 children have been learning new knowledge and skills to be able to write their own version of a story in French.
At the start of this academic year, Year 6 were introduced to their new unit of learning in French, where they would be learning all of the knowledge and skills needed to write their own version of the story, "GO AWAY BIG GREEN MONSTER," by Ed Emberley.
First the children watched the story in English and we created a knowledge harvest to discuss what the children already knew and what knowledge and skills they would need to learn in order to complete this task .
Over the course of this half term, everyone has worked hard to build on previous leaning and learn new vocabulary for different body parts and new grammar knowledge about singular and plural nouns and adjectival agreements.
They have also worked on the skill of using a bilingual dictionary to translate and to find out a nouns gender or if a word is a noun, verb or adjective so that they could write their own accurate independent sentences.
Once the children have completed their stories, they will focus on the skill of speaking and reading aloud in French with increasing confidence and fluency and will share and celebrate their learning with their parents.

The children had a great time being creative, painting on tinfoil, mixing colours and using sponges to dab and spread paint. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to explore, experiment and develop their independence, all while having fun through play.

Can you still remember some poems, songs and rhymes you learned as a child? The week beginning 11th November is World Nursery Rhyme Week and we need your help and support!
It is a proven fact that learning nursery rhymes, children's songs and poems boosts children's vocabulary and language development as well as their social, physical and emotional skills.
Being an International School where over 20 languages are spoken, we would love to promote and celebrate the languages the children speak at home .
Before, the week beginning 11th November, please could you support your child or children to memorise a well know poem, rhyme or song from your Home Country or in your Mother Tongue. During the week beginning 1th November, the children can recite and perform what they have learned with their classmates. Through this, we can all learn more about each other's cultures.
Thank you in advance.
Ms Becky
Congratulations to Sarisha who won the U10 Junior Tennis Tournament and Savannah who won the girls U9's, hosted by RAH Tennis Club last week.

Last Friday, Sarisha participated in the Junior Tennis Tournament U10 at RAH. It was the first time she competed in the tournament and she won! Due to the hot weather, she had to show plenty of resilience to keep playing on and not give up.
Savannah also had more success after returning to tennis after a break this summer; she won the girls Under 9s tournament. Technically still an Under 8, she chose to play up an age group. On the bigger court with an orange ball and against many of the boys, she had lots of success. Well done Savannah!
Thank you to all the parents who completed the Home Languages questionnaire. We have had several parents who have volunteered to teach their Mother Tongue to the children. We hope to begin offering these classes in January 2025. A sign up form will be shared with you later this term. We still need parents to offer to teach Hindi. Please contact myself, at rpack@pdoschool.com if you are interested.
