School  Newsletter

  6th September 2023

Dear Parents,

Another busy week of learning this week, we have all been embracing the 'Good Struggle'.

After school clubs have been well received by parents, 94% of our children have signed up for these activities and confirmation of the club allocations have been sent out.

Can we please remind all parents and drivers to park in designated parking spaces in school. I have been sent several photographs of cars parked illegally this week. As we have children crossing the roads we need to ensure that this area is safe. Please support in ensuring you park correctly at all times.

Deputy Headteacher

We are pleased to announce that Claire Richmond our new Deputy Headteacher will be joining the school shortly. See the profile below for Claire.

Claire has been Deputy Principal at Panaga Shell School, Brunei, for the past six years and prior to this she was Head of Early Years at The British International School, Abu Dhabi. In total, she has more than two decades of teaching and leading and thirteen of these years have been in Shell schools (Syria, Nigeria and Brunei). Claire is a values led leader and she develops positive relationships with staff, students and parents alike. Claire has experience working across different ages and stages and she truly believes in the child being at the centre of any learning community.

Claire will be coming to Oman with her husband and three children and they are all very excited about this next chapter in their lives.

Seesaw

Seesaw will be new our school communication Application, it will replace the class pages and will provide an opportunity for students and teachers to share learning with you, it will also be used as a messaging service and will enable parents and teachers to engage in dialogue. We will provide more information in the coming weeks on how parents can use the application.

We are currently introducing it in school and ensuring all staff are familiar with Seesaw, our next step will be to load student profiles on the system this will enable us to communicate directly with parents and provide relevant information. Our target launch date is the end of September for full implementation. As with all new systems, we will experience a few glitches, however the end result will be an enhanced communication system for our school.

Please see the data privacy information in the link below and confirm  if you are happy for you and your family to use the application:

Early Years

This week in Early Years, we had a fantastic start to our new topic, ‘This is Me’. Many children brought in special items from home to show their friends. The children took turns talking about their favourite things and tried hard to listen and ask questions when their friends shared. This was a great way for the children to learn that we all have different likes and interests, but we can still celebrate what makes each of us unique.

Milepost 1

Year 1

Year One experienced an impromptu school show this week and were treated to a re-enactment of the traditional tale 'Little Red Riding Hood'.  There was much excitement and anticipation as they received their Entry Tickets and took a seat.

After the show, the children returned to their classrooms and used iPads to scan QR codes that gave them access to a few different traditional tales. We are pleased to see the children using their personal goals, showing their understanding of the importance of collaboration, taking turns and problem-solving.

The afternoon was spent working in groups to re-create their own traditional tale by making masks, backdrops and some props using a range of materials. Children worked collaboratively to choose roles and practised the plot line from their own traditional tales.

Year 2

Year  2s enjoyed an active Entry Point on Sunday!   They travelled in different ways using their bodies and gym equipment.  They discussed ways of travelling and how they get from place to place.

After, they 'travelled' to a country from around the world.  They realised that they'd need passports, boarding passes and other documents to travel!  The children found out where they were going and packed a suitcase for their journey and found out the different types of transport used in that country.

"I liked making my passport," Hana, 2A

"I liked the travelling," Nivaan, 2A

"I liked it all, it looked real!" Ahmad, 2A

"I liked drawing all of the clothes for my trip." Landry, 2H

"I liked signing in with my passports and the tickets." Aisha, 2H

"I liked it when we were packing our suitcase for the trip." Benyamin, 2H

Milepost 2

Year 3

Year 3s had a ROARSOME Entry Point on Sunday! The children worked collaboratively to create salt dough ammonite fossils before returning to the Y3N classroom to discover that someone or something had wreaked havoc, upturning tables and scattering resources everywhere. Through video evidence the children concluded that it was in fact a T-Rex who was the culprit! Later our young paleontologists worked in teams to complete a dinosaur scavenger hunt. We hope that this Entry Point got the children thinking about and engaged with the learning that is to come.

Milepost 3

Year 5

If you could design an animal by combining the best characteristics and features from other animals, what would your animal look like? This was the questions Year 5 faced for their entry point for their new IPC topic 'Extreme Survivors'.

How will everyone's 'animal' fare when they are placed in extreme environments?

Who will survive?

Who's got the attributes to thrive? We will find out throughout the term...

Year 6

This week, Year 6 were introduced to their new IPC topic 'The Great, the Bold and the Brave'. For their entry point, the students were given two images of a building and tasked with making a model out of recyclable materials. The activity gave the students plenty of opportunity to use many Personal Learning Goals. They had to collaborate with their team mates and be empathetic by supporting others; think carefully about how to make their model; communicate their ideas; respect the different opinions in the group; and be resilient and adaptable when things didn't quite go to plan.

French

Over the last two weeks in French, Milepost 2 and Milepost 3 children have been discussing all of the different languages they speak both in school and at home, the importance of learning languages and how speaking different languages supports us all in becoming Global Citizens.  The children have also been learning about the countries in the world that speak French and locating them on maps and Atlases.  Year 1 children have started to learn French for the first time and have been extremely eager to learn and participate in class.  They have been learning some simple greetings in French and with the help of Sabine, the French puppet, are trying hard to pronounce these new words and phrases accurately.
