PDO School  Newsletter

11th December 2024

Dear Parents

As we approach the end of another productive term at PDO School, I would like to share with you the latest updates and achievements from our school community. This newsletter offers a glimpse into the exciting developments and activities that have taken place recently, all designed to enrich your child’s educational journey.

One of the standout innovations this term has been the introduction of dedicated STEM lessons, celebrated this week with STEM Week. Teaching STEM as a separate subject allows students to develop critical skills that are essential for success in the modern world. By focusing on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM education encourages analytical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. It provides students with opportunities to engage in hands-on, project-based learning that bridges the gap between theory and real-world applications.

What made STEM Week even more impactful was the involvement of you, our community of parents. Your participation brought a new dimension to the activities, showing our students how learning extends beyond the classroom and into the wider community.

Thank you for your unwavering support as we work together to nurture confident, lifelong learners. I hope you enjoy reading about these achievements as much as we enjoyed seeing them come to life.

STEM Week - 'The Great Egg Challenge'

The Great Egg Challenge was an exhilarating and unforgettable event that had the children buzzing with excitement!

Tasked with the mission of preventing a fragile egg from breaking, the children showcased incredible creativity, resilience and collaboration as they designed and built their own parachutes, model boats, and model cars. Year 1, 2 and 3 excitedly tested their creations, holding their breath as eggs soared through the air in parachutes and endured thrilling free falls. The Year 5 and 6 children eagerly watched as their model boats floated across the water and their cars rolled forward, nervously anticipating whether their designs would succeed. The test arenas buzzed with laughter, cheers, and gasps, as each attempt brought a mix of suspense and joy. The children had an amazing time designing, testing, learning, and celebrating their successes, making it a truly egg-cellent adventure! Thank you to the parents who were able to attend.

Home Languages Program to Start in Term 2

We are excited to be launching our Home Languages Program starting in Term 2 for Milepost 2 and 3 children.  Arabic, Urdu and Spanish will be offered to children who speak these languages at home with their parents. They will take place on Wednesday after school as part of the Enrichment Program. This would not be possible without the commitment of our parent volunteers. Thank you so much for you support and dedication.

Early Years Training

Your child's education and wellbeing is always at the forefront of everything we do. Miss Emma was able to attend a course last Friday for Best Practice in Early Years delivered by Dr Alistair Bryce-Clegg. Dr Alistair is a leading Early Years consultant from the UK and has a wealth of experience when it comes to children's development and early learning. The course was very engaging and Alistair was able to show everyone the latest research in Early Childhood Education. Miss Emma will be sharing lots of insightful ways next term with the team which will further improve and enhance your children's education.

The children have been taking part in their chosen activities:

Mileage Running Club - A few incredible facts about Mileage Club: The children have run approximately 280km between them. The highest record was 28km. Half of the children got to 10km and half got to 15km!  Students not only covered a huge amount of ground, earning cool wristbands to mark their achievements, but they also reflected on healthy wellbeing practices.

Board Game Design - Plenty of thought, design and collaboration have gone into this activity. The students created their own board games and the outcome was brilliant. They enjoyed playing them as much as they did designing them. Game Makers and Game Changers!

Illustrators - Our student artists shared a creative space to come together to explore the art of illustration and develop their skills. Creativity and self-expression were encouraged, and the outcomes were exceptional - there were inspirational ink drawings, watercolour washes, paintings and wonderful drawings.

Jigsaw Puzzling - While developing their spatial-reasoning skills, students have been solving and creating jigsaw puzzles with lots of collaboration, problem-solving and creativity.

Paper Craft - Pop-up cards, butterflies, and origami hearts were just a few of the amazing paper creations the children crafted during this activity. Through following step-by-step instructions, working together, and using their imaginations, they brought their awesome ideas to life in 3D.

Lego - With open-ended building activities and Lego creator kits, lots of fun learning has taken place unleashing creativity and developing collaboration.

Den Building - Impressive towering structures are standing in the Learning Souk after 6 weeks of designing, reviewing & adapting -and incredible teamwork. The children designed houses to protect us in different environments!

Archery - Improving their hand-eye coordination, concentration & focus, students have gained self confidence and used their mathematical skills too and the term ended in a tight competition!

Marble Run - Using tubes and materials to design and make marble runs, as well as our National Geographic magnetic STEM marble run creator kits, which has made for some challenging problem-solving activities.

After a hugely successful first term, we look forward to welcoming the students back after the winter holiday when they will start a new Choose-day activity and achieve even more of their Personal Learning Goals.

TERM 2: Cooking will make a comeback and we will introduce Gardening, Water Play, Felt and Fabric Art, Ultimate Frisbee and, wait for it....DRONES! ...and many more!

Our children say they want a hoodie

And so they have designed one suitable for use in school on colder winter days.  You can see a sample and place an order with Ms Jawahir at the school main reception.  Hoodies will cost 18.900 OMR including VAT (payable in cash on ordering) and will only be available by pre-ordering before Monday 16th December.  We expect a lead time of between 3 and 4 weeks.   CLICK HERE to see a size chart.

Parent Portal discontinued

The Parent Portal was introduced as a place to share all important information reliably and quickly.  It was password protected to safeguard privileged information in the now discontinued Class Pages.  Now that we have moved to using Seesaw as our primary means of communication, all the information on the Parent Portal can also be found on the new school website (www.pdoschool.org).  Having outlived its original purpose, it will be discontinued at the end of this school term.

Waterpolo Champions

Last week we hosted a Waterpolo festival at PDO. It was a fantastic tournament with Taism, Royal Flight, Our Planet and three PDO teams taking part. Our teams played incredibly well with a 4th, 3rd and 1st place finish.

Our Titans team played Royal flight in the final which many have commented on being one of the most exciting finals they have seen! It was end to end with the school tied at 9-9. We had 3 minutes of extra overtime in which the Titans came out victorious to retain our Waterpolo Trophy and add to our impressive haul of trophies this term.

Well done to everyone who took part!

Early Years

Exploring bugs in our unit The Brilliant Bug Ball and learning how they contribute to ecosystems, while reflecting on our personal goal of resilience.

We began with a check in, reflecting on how we can be resilient like Walter the Spider. Using our personal goal of resilience, we explored ways to keep trying our best and tackle new learning challenges. The children were inspired by The Hungry Caterpillar as we read the story and explored the butterfly life cycle, creating a project based on the stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. We also went outside to look for worms and had a bug hunt, using prepositional language to describe where we found them. This project helped us understand the important role insects like butterflies and worms play in ecosystems and why it is crucial to care for our planet; key aspects of becoming globally competent. The children also created special goodbye cards for the butterflies, with drawings and messages inside.  What a busy and exploratory unit!

Milepost 1

This week, Milepost 1 has been all about birds! Inspired by the arrival of bird feeders on our classroom windows, the children created colourful posters to encourage birds to visit. Their efforts worked brilliantly, and soon our new feathered friends began to arrive!

As part of our Animals of Oman topic, we’ve been learning about the birds that call Oman home. Watching the birds up close inspired us to study their colours and unique features, which led to creating scientific drawings. By giving each other constructive feedback, we improved our work, learned collaboratively, and created some truly exceptional drawings that we’re all very proud of!

Milepost 2

Milepost 2 continued delving into the aromatic world of spice during our 'Beautiful Oman' unit.

In groups, children identified 5 common spices used in Omani food and explained the role of the spice trade in shaping Omani cuisine. Collaboration and effective communication enabled children to share their findings about spices using descriptive language. Keep an eye out for upcoming Omani-inspired recipes.

Milepost 3

This week, Year 5 have been putting their creativity and imagination to the test by designing robots for extreme environments!

Each robot was carefully thought out, with the children writing detailed explanation texts about how their unique features would help them survive challenging conditions.

The excitement didn’t stop there—many children were so inspired by their designs that they suggested creating Top Trump cards for their robots. This wonderful idea added an extra layer of fun and engagement to their learning. Well done, Year 5, for showing such enthusiasm and innovation!

Toddler Hut

This week, we embraced the chill of the season with some wintry-inspired activities at Toddler Hut. The children had a wonderful time decorating snowflakes with tissue paper, sticking and gluing to create beautiful frosty designs. Outside, we painted and marked snowflakes, enjoying the crisp air while bringing a touch of winter magic to our creations. In the water tray, the children gave our little minibeasts a refreshing wash, splashing and laughing as they played.  It was a delightful morning filled with frosty fun and hands-on exploration!

Congratulations to our Learners of the Week

Well done, lots of wonderful achievements this week - Keep up all the hard work!

Pro Tennis Tournament

Well done to Hattie and Mia who participated in the Pro Tennis Tournament at ABA School last weekend.
