TTU Math Competition

Recently, AMS took part in the TTU Math competition. AMS competed in the high school competition on Tuesday, April 5th, and the middle school competition on April 7th.

In the high school competition: Congrats to all of our AMS Math students who competed at 64th annual High School Mathematics contest at TTU among the best of the best math students in the Upper Cumberland. There were a total of 14 schools represented and 229 students. Top AMS scorers for Algebra I were Anthony Spike who tied for 5th place out of 49 middle and high school competitors and Rilee Haney who came in 9th in the same Algebra 1 competition. Other AMS competitors placed 16th and 17th. Top AMS scorer for Algebra II was Corbin Norris who placed 5th out of 46 middle and high school competitors. Other AMS competitors placed 12th and 15th. We are very proud of all 12 students who attended the contest who strive everyday to be successful in math. In the middle school competition: We are incredibly proud to announce our successes at the Middle School Mathematics competition held at TTU. Thirty-five schools were represented at the competition from across the Upper Cumberland including Upperman and Avery Trace. AMS sent four competitors to represent each grade level and five out of the twelve placed in the top ten. In 6th grade, AMS had two representatives finish 2nd out of 113 competitors, Zaid Fest and Kihara Ngido. In 8th grade, all four competitors finished in the top 20 out of 119 competitors. Andrew Ramey tied for 8th place, Silas Pirkle tied for 5th, and Corbin Norris outright won the competition with a 25 point margin over the 2nd place finisher. This is Corbin’s second year in a row topping his grade level at the competition! We are proud of all of the attendees who competed on behalf of AMS today and look forward to your future successes in math and beyond! Bathrooms

By Bree Brown

As some of you may know the bathrooms beside the cafeteria are under construction. When they are done, you will be able to use them all throughout the day, except for the beginning of the day, the end of the day, and during lunch. To make sure we do not get that bathroom taken away permanently, (*ahem* BOYS!) do not climb on stall doors, splash toilet water on your friends, or stick things in urinals that should not be in urinals. My advice for the girls, do not hang out in the bathrooms or film your cringey little tik toks in there. Though no one should have to tell you these things, I think some of you need to hear it.

Dance Team

By Alivia Greer

You should definitely try out for the AMS Dance Team 2022-2023 school year if you like to dance! Mrs. Kramer is the instructor and she is so kind. She is so encouraging and flexible for any schedule if you are doing Madagascar, soccer, basketball, or any other after school activities she will try her best to work around other schedules. Here is a Q&A interview from Mrs. Kramer on her Dance Team!

Q: When are tryouts and what are you looking for from the kids at tryouts?

A: Tryouts are April 21st, but students must attend the tryout clinics on 4/6 and 4/13 to learn the material for tryouts. I am looking for dancers who are willing to step outside of their comfort zone and learn new styles of dance, work hard in and out of school, and have a positive attitude.

Q:What must the kids do to try out?

A: Students will learn a 30 second dance and skills to perform at tryouts.

Q:What is your favorite part about being the dance instructor at AMS?

A:I love watching dancers grow and extend their dance abilities from the beginning of the year to the end, as well as find the love for dance as I have.

Q:What are 3 words that you would use to describe yourself?

A: Loving, Silly, Outgoing

Q:If there was one thing you could do to improve the dance team what would you do?

A: I would like to get more students involved in the dance program and eventually be able to compete at Nationals!

Q:Finally, what do you want to say to all of the students and dancers at AMS?

A: Thank you for supporting the dance team at AMS! From participating in fundraisers to cheering for us during performances, we couldn’t do it without the support of fellow Redskins. Anyone who has questions or thoughts about joining this program, please feel free to reach out via email. Thank you!

Well, there you have it! If you have any questions please see Mrs. Kramer in her classroom! You should definitely try out for AMS Dance Team 2022-2023!

Lizards

By Ben Thompson

The first lizard species was the Hylonomus. This type of lizard was also the very first found reptile. They have earned the Genius name Hylonomus. They were about 30 to 20 centimeters long (8 to 12 inches long). They lived in swamps and ate small insects and vertebrates. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo monitor, is a member of the monitor lizard family Varanidae that is endemic to the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. It is the largest extant species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 meters (10 ft), and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb).
