Gifted and Talented Program

Rationale/Philosophy

Perry County School District #32 Gifted and Talented Program(s) are based on the belief that we should provide students with maximum opportunities of academic development. Students who are identified as gifted are capable of outstanding achievement in one or more academic areas. Their exceptional thinking, precociousness, creative abilities and reasoning contribute to their potential for superior performance. The program(s) offers these students opportunities to maximize their capabilities, demonstrate knowledge and skills that enable them to acquire, apply and assess information from all disciplines as lifelong learners, and demonstrate the ability to apply thinking skills to solve problems individually or collectively.

The gifted program develops the analytical thinking skills of the student. The analytical thinker is able to examine and break information into parts by identifying motives or causes. He/She is able to make inferences and find evidence to support generalizations.

The gifted program develops the creative abilities of the students. The creative student is able to compile acquired information in a different way by combining elements into new patterns proposing alternative solutions.

The gifted program develops the evaluative thinking skills of the student. The student with advanced evaluation abilities is able to present and defend opinions and beliefs by making judgments about information, validity of ideas or quality of work based on a set of criteria.
