Read this passage about the importance of polite language in hospitality. Key phrase are highlighted to help you learn useful expressions.
Using polite language is essential in hospitality because it creates a welcoming atmosphere for guests. When you greet a passenger, you might ask, “Can I help you with anything?” This simple question shows that you care about their needs. Additionally, asking, “Would you like some assistance?” lets them know you are ready to support them.
Polite language also helps build trust. For example, saying, “Could I get you some information?” encourages guests to feel comfortable asking questions. Have you ever felt unsure about something while traveling? Guests appreciate when you say, “Is there anything else I can assist you with?” This shows you are attentive and willing to help.
When you want to offer assistance on a cruise ship, it’s important to use polite language. Here are some key expressions you can use:
May I (do something)?: The word "may" is a modal verb that shows possibility or makes a request. It is a very formal way to offer help. For example, you can say, “May I offer you my help?” or “May I carry your bag for you?”
Would you like me to (do something)?: This phrase is a polite way to express an offer of help. It is formal and kind. You might say, “Would you like me to open the window?” or “Would you like me to bring you a drink?”
Can I (do something)?: The word "can" is used to offer help in a less formal but still polite way. It’s appropriate for both friends and strangers. You can say, “Can I bring you a dessert?” or “Can I give you a lift?”
Do you want me to (do something)?: This phrase is less formal but still kind. It’s useful when you’re unsure about what the other person wants. For example, you could ask, “Do you want me to go for you?” or “Do you want me to pick you up?”

Read the following text, identify common questions on a cruise, and write them below.
Setting: The sun is shining on the cruise ship, and passengers are gathering near the pool area. Paula is setting up for the day’s activities when Tom approaches her.
Tom:
Excuse me, could you please tell me where the spa is located?
Paula:
Of course! The spa is on Deck 4. Just take the elevator and follow the signs. How can I help you with anything else?
Tom:
Actually, I’m also looking for the dining room. What time is dinner served?
Just then, Lisa joins the conversation.
Lisa:
Hi there! I heard you asking about the dining room. Dinner is served at 7 PM. It’s a great time to meet new people!
Tom:
Thanks for the info! Are there any activities planned before dinner?
Paula:
Yes! We have a pool party at 2 PM and a trivia game at 4 PM. Would you like to join?
Tom:
That sounds fun! I’d love to join the trivia game. What about you, Lisa?
Lisa:
Absolutely! I participated in the trivia game last year, and it was a blast! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, Tom.
Paula smiles as she listens to them.
Paula:
Great! I’ll make sure to reserve spots for both of you. Is there anything else I can help you with?
Tom:
Actually, could you help me with my luggage later? I’m not sure where to go for that.
Paula:
Of course! I can arrange for someone to assist you with your luggage. Just let me know when you’re ready.
Lisa:
Thank you, Paula! You’re really helpful. I’m excited about today!
Paula:
You’re welcome! I’m here to make sure you have a fantastic time. Enjoy the sun, and I’ll see you both later!
As Paula walks away to check on the pool setup, Tom and Lisa start discussing their plans for the day.
