STEM Code of Conduct

This STEM Code of Conduct is intended to supplement the Code of Conduct found in the Pointe Coupee Parish School Board Student Handbook. The STEM Code of Conduct is applicable to the District’s processes for suspensions and expulsions as outlined in the Pointe Coupee Parish School Board Student Handbook. However, since the success of STEM Magnet Academy of Pointe Coupee greatly depends on student conduct, students are held to a higher standard of behavior. Therefore, a three strikes behavior system will be enforced on ALL School Board property and District-provided transportation. Below is a list of offenses and consequences that will be used. Students will be given three strikes before they are dismissed from SMA. Serious offenses, described below as category A, will constitute an automatic dismissal. A hearing will be held whenever a student is dismissed from SMA for negative behavior. At this time, the best placement (home-based school, alternative program, home school, expulsion) for the student will be determined.

CATEGORY A: AUTOMATIC DISMISSAL FROM ACADEMY

Possession or distribution of illegal narcotics or drugs
Possession of firearm or dangerous weapon
Possession/Use of Alcohol
Terrorizing [making a bomb threat – etc.]
Bringing and/or possession of dangerous objects
Hitting / Threatening School Board personnel
Defying/Disrespect with vulgarity, verbal and/or aggressive behavior directed at personnel
Instigation Discord/Fomentation
Fighting/Assault/Disturbing the Peace
Smoking/Possession of Tobacco, Cigarettes, E-Cigarettes, Cigars, Matches and/or Lighters, Fireworks
Sexual Harassment/Molestation/Fondling/Indecent Exposure
Inappropriate/Illegal use of Technology
Inappropriate display of affection

CATEGORY B: EACH OFFENSE CONSTITUTES ONE STRIKE

Tampering with Fire Alarm/Fire Extinguisher
Leaving Campus without Permission/Truancy
Cutting Class
Destruction/Defacing School Board Property
Stealing/Extortion
Forgery
Obscene Language [cursing and/or materials]
Gambling - Possession of Gambling Paraphernalia
Threatening/ Harassment/Intimidation of Another Student
Willful Disobedience
Removal from class by Administrator/Interference with Class-Campus Duties
Leaving Class/Administrative Office without Permission
Plagiarism/Cheating on Test and/or Assignment

CATEGORY C: THREE OFFENSES CONSTITUTES ONE STRIKE

Failure to follow teacher’s directions/classroom/school rules
Littering
Drinking/ Eating/Chewing gum in class
Lack of instructional supplies and materials
Failure to complete home/class/punish work
Sleeping in class
Hallway violation [screaming, running, disturbing classes, etc.]
Public display of affection
Intentional dress code violation
Class tardiness
Cell phone violation (see electronic devices policy)
