Applicability of the design space approach is not restricted to the configuration, demand temperature, collector type, working fluid or radiation data. The approach may reduce the labor, expertise, and expense involved in the design and optimization of a variety of solar thermal systems.
3. Ph. D. Research
Completed in 2008 from Department of Energy Science and Engineering IIT Bombay
Topic – Design and Optimization of Solar Thermal Systems
Supervisor: Prof. Santanu Bandyopadhyay,
Co-supervisor: Prof. Shireesh B. Kedare
Abstract
Appropriate design of a solar thermal system is important to assure the maximum benefit to the user, especially for commercial and industrial applications. Existing design procedures are either based on simple correlations with limited applicability or based on detailed simulation models with limited scope for optimization and designer interventions.
A methodology called the design space approach is developed in this thesis for design and optimization of solar thermal systems. Design space portrays all possible and feasible designs of the system subject to different constraints. Design space is represented on a collector area versus storage volume diagram through constant solar fraction curves and limiting storage line. Inclusion of limiting storage condition prevents energy dumping and ensures effective utilization of available solar energy. The design space approach is simple, flexible, and offers choice in the system optimization. The illustration of system optimization using design space approach demonstrates a 4% reduction in total annualized cost as compared to the existing design practice.
The methodology is utilized for investigating the effect of collector, storage and load characteristics on the system design. Analysis shows 10% reduction in economic benefit with increase in the load temperature by 16%. The possibility of obtaining optimum load timing and duration is also demonstrated. The problem of storage tank cooling due to immediate replenishment of cold makeup water to the storage tank during draw offs is analyzed. An economic benefit of 17% as well as an improvement in performance by 12% is predicted with the proposed replenishment strategy. Optimum component sizing in solar industrial process heat systems is addressed. As compared to the existing system, the optimum design, obtained using the proposed methodology, offers 23% reduction in the total annualized cost.
Modular Parabolic Trough collector
4. ME Dissertation
Completed in 1993 from
Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering Pune
Topic – Performance Evaluation of Parabolic Trough Concentrators
Supervisor: Dr. G.S. Tasgaonkar
Abstract
The process of evaluating performance of parabolic trough collectors contained two iterative loops. The procedure was complex and tedious. A FORTRAN Code was written to estimate optical efficiency, instantaneous collector efficiency and output in the form of fluid outlet temperature of Parabolic Trough Concentrators. Effect of various collector parameters and radiation parameters on the performance was also undertaken.
