Sylvania Creates! Spring 2018

Weeks 9, 10, 11 celebration showcasing music, art, writing, design and dance created by PCC students, faculty, and guests.

Friday, June 1st, 6:30 pm, Spring Dance Concert, The Little Theater, CT 201

The Spring Dance Concert features work by the PCC Dance Performance Class, Hip Hop, Ballet, Ballroom, BodyVox JAG and more! $5-15 sliding scale tickets available at the door. Proceeds go to the PCC Sylvania Dance Program.


MONDAY (June 4)

Monday, June 4th, 2:30-5 pm, The Ancient Art of Lost Wax Bronze Casting, CT Sculpture Yard (behind the Bookstore)

Come watch students and sculpture faculty pour molten metal into molds that have very recently lost their beautiful hand made wax sculptures. Cheer on PCC students who have learned this complicated art form practiced by artists in West Africa, India and Greece during the Ancient period of world history.


Monday-Thursday, June 4th - June 7th, Sumi Ink Club project, CC Mall

Beat the stress of finals week by activating the power of doodling. PCC student leaders will facilitate this Sumi Ink Club project. Sumi Ink Club is non-heirarchical: all ages, all humans, all styles, participatory drawing project established in 2005 by artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. The club produces work cooperatively in open to the public meetings, and this will be a PCC run version of the club. Come hang out with the Sumi Ink Club and add to a collaborative drawing that will be displayed on campus when it's complete.


Monday, June 4th, 6:30-8:00 pm, Sylvania Music Student Recital, Performing Arts Center - Free Admission

The Sylvania Chamber Ensemble will perform works by John Williams, Hirokazu Tanaka - Metroid, Billy Joel, Arcangelo Corelli, David Bowie, and J.S. Bach. Will also feature student instrumental and vocal soloists.

Tuesday, June 5th, 12 noon, Metal Casting in the Learning Garden

Come down to Sylvania's Learning Garden and watch the fascinating forms created by melting and pouring scrap aluminum into water. Watch as sculpture faculty and students create beautiful shapes that will become part of the Learning Garden art collection. What could be more wonderful than bees, flowers, the garden and molten aluminum poured into water!


Tuesday, June 5th, 2-3 pm, Artist Talk: Photographer Rachel Wolf, CT 112 (photography classroom)

Rachel Wolf is a professional photographer who specializes in camera-less photography, alternative/ antique processes, and creates immersive environments through light-based installations. Many of her projects are experiments in which the external world becomes a way of considering inner reality and visual perception.

Wednesday, June 6th, 11 am-12 pm, Artist Demo: Moku Hanga printmaking technique, Alex Prentiss, CT 125

Printmaker Alex Prentiss will demonstrate making color prints through the ancient art of Moku Hanga. Japanese woodblock prints are characterized by the luminous brilliance achieved when water-based ink is printed on Washi (handmade Japanese paper), using multiple block registration and bokashi (color gradation). Unlike Western relief printmaking, no press is used; water is the only solvent and minimal workspace is required. This is one form of printmaking you can safely and easily enjoy at home.

Come watch a handful of selected shorts, followed by light but insightful discussion led by Vandoren Wheeler and his brilliant film students:

“The Hill” (two people recall a troubling event in starkly different ways)

“Two Cars, One Night” (neglected kids impress each other in a bar’s parking lot—directed by Taika Waitit Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople)

“Family Tree” (an unpredictable, magical-realism laced comedy)

“The Most Beautiful Man in the World” (a child’s obscured view of her father)

among others!

Alchemy Magazine Launch party! Guest poet Robert Lashley performs, presentations of Creative Writing Focus Awards, students read from Alchemy, creative writing and art faculty collaborations, along with a tribute to Ursula K. Le Guin.

Silkscreen demos. Come get your T-shirt or bag silkscreened with an image designed by our very own Gene Flores, Dean of Visual and Performing Arts and Design! Thursday, June 7th, 1:00 pm-2:00 p.m.

LIVE MUSIC with Matices Latin Trio - Incorporating elements from Latin folk music, Cuban Son, Brazilian Bossa Nova, and Latin Jazz, Matices Trio plays an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary music from Latin America. Members of the trio hail from Chile, Cuba and the US, featuring a variety of instruments and rhythms from Latin America and creating a unique fusion of style.
