I am Jonathan Ortiz (he/him.él), and I am a Cultural Anthropologist by training. I received my undergraduate degree in Anthropology and Spanish from Pacific Lutheran University and my doctorate in Cultural Anthropology from American University.

I have been teaching at Portland Community College since 2011 and have also taught at Concordia University, Walla Walla University, and the National University of Naturopathic Medicine. I have taught Chicanx/Latinx Studies, the Sociology of Privilege and Oppression, Intro to Sociology, the Sociology of Diversity, and the History of Race in the U.S. Since 1856. I have recently begun to research and teach on Race and Health Disparities

As an anthropologist, my focus has been on race, ethnicity, and class, ranging from theory to the formation of racial categories and how they are passed along and resisted. In the last few years, my work has begun to focus on issues of Equity and Inclusion at the institutional level, with a particular focus on curriculum design.

I am Mexican, Pocho, and sometimes Chicano.
