Unit 1 Discussion

Part One

We are going to do something a bit different than what you might expect for a discussion assignment. As a way to begin to co-create a collaborative learning community in this course, rather than tell you the questions to which you need to respond, how about you share with us what most intrigued you about what you read in this week's assigned reading?

Here's what you need to do:

1. Select an idea or issue that really piqued your interest from Chapter 1: Theoretical Perspectives: A Biopsychosocial Approach to Positive Aging.
2. State what the idea or issue is, summarize the issue or idea, and then talk a bit about why this issue or idea is important to you. Do you have a personal connection to this idea? Does this idea offer you any new insights to your own experiences with aging? Do you have any initial notions about how food and nutrition might fit into this framework?
3. As well, offer a new question you have about adult aging from the biopsychosocial perspective that you hope we will explore in this course.

NOTE: The issue or idea you select may be confusing, intriguing, interesting, flummoxing...in other words, you can select an issue or idea that doesn't make sense to you, with which you don't agree, or about which you want to know more. But please tell us your thoughts about it!

Part Two

Take the myths of aging quiz to test your knowledge of the facts and the myths about what happens in life's later years. Describe your reaction to the quiz. Did you score higher or lower than you expected? Were you surprised by any of the answers? If you were, tell me why! Finally, pick a topic from the quiz related to adult aging that you found particularly interesting, and tell everyone why that piqued your interest, and what additional information you would like to know about the topic.
