I'm Jennifer Rogers, and I will be your instructor for LIB 100: Using the Library for College Success. I look forward to working with you this term! The information on this page is an introduction to the course and the first week.
I love being a librarian. Not only do I get to work with students and help them grow as researchers and consumers of information, I learn from them too. Every time I help a student with their research, I learn a little bit about their topic myself, so, like most librarians, I end up knowing just a little bit about a lot of things.
I spend most of my free time wrangling my two school-aged children, but given the opportunity, I love exploring the Portland food scene, good books (via traditional books and audiobooks), and recently, learning to crochet.
I want to share my excitement about the power of information to change lives. I teach this course because I know that having good research skills can help you be successful in college, and also can help with decision-making of all sorts. I am excited to share what I know and to learn from you, as we navigate the changing information landscape together.
As your course instructor, I am your first contact for help you need in this class. If something doesn't make sense, sounds confusing, or you'd just like more information, let me know! Post your question in the "Ask Your Instructor" discussion, or email me through the class list, or ask during class!
My philosophy of teaching an online course is that I'm a facilitator. The responsibility for learning the course material and developing your research skills through this course is yours, though I will create and facilitate engaging learning activities that will help you achieve your goals. When you have questions or run into problems, remember I am only an email or discussion post away!
Be sure to come to our first class, via Zoom, on Tuesday, March 31st from 1-2:20pm
Come to class! This is a PCC requirement. Students who don't attend the first day of the class will be dropped from the course and have their tuition reimbursed. Email me right away if something urgent is preventing you from attending the first day of class.
Read through the Introduction to Online Learning module.
Read through the Complete by Day 1 and Course Information module. Ask any questions in "Ask Your Instructor" discussion module.
Welcome to Lib100 discussion. Try to complete before class, but it is OK if you don't get to it. It is due by 11:59pm March 31st, the first day of class. This is another way I can verify your attendance in this class.
Come to class!
Showing up to our weekly Zoom classes is the best way to be successful in this class.
Read the weekly announcements.
Read the announcements on the class homepage. These will include tips for the week.
Complete all learning activities.
This includes reading the materials, viewing videos, participating in discussions, and completing assignments. Always read or watch all of the learning materials before attempting the assignment.
Seek help.
Reach out for help when you need it. In addition to me, your instructor, you can get help from any PCC librarian through Library Chat or a Research Help appointment.
Try to complete assignments on time or early.
You'll do more thorough work on assignments if you are not rushed by a looming deadline. Set a goal to complete your work a day early, and you'll be relieved to have a little extra time when challenges arise.
Communicate with me.
Ask questions! I love hearing from you. I realize these are busy times, and I am here to support you. Keep me informed if you run into a challenge for meeting a due date. Let me know when you need help.
