Recent changes to the City of Portland Zoning Code allows for the development of up to 6 dwelling units on a single family lot. In this course you will explore developing a residential site in Portland, OR into a ‘Cottage Cluster’, a collection of 4 residential units with outdoor common space for gardening/landscaping and community building.
You’ll apply high performance building systems and sustainable site planning principles to your designs, while creating both design and construction documents.
We'll implement sustainable site planning strategies to create designs that nurture the earth and foster a sense of community and belonging. Students will implement stormwater management, water conservation and solar/wind orientation techniques.
High Performance Buildings go beyond code requirements to conserve energy use, increase durability and promote a sense of well being for the inhabitants. You'll apply Passive Building Systems and High Performance Building Envelope principles to your projects to create buildings that are energy efficient and responsive to Portland's climate.
