MEDIA Arts Juniors and Seniors

Media students were asked to create a media art project that visually explores who they are as an artist. They were encouraged to think about what media artists are making today and conduct research and reflect on what they think media art can be.

In the Elements

I took this picture to represent who I am as a photographer. I am a photographer who loves to take pictures of nature and landscapes. I love being in nature because it is peaceful and it's filled with color. I also incorporated a person on the left side of the photo to represent myself taking a picture of what I love. The person on the left is blurry because I want nature to be the main focus of this photo. I chose this background because it is bright green grass that has some yellow flowers mixed into it, which makes the shadows and the dark trees in the background stand out.

Fresh Air

Inkjet Print

I created a photograph based on visually exploring myself as a media artist. I wanted to take what was happening around the world in the past year and turn it into something meaningful to me. Since we’ve been quarantined together since March, my little sister is the model for most of my photography. For this picture, we went to a park just out of town. I’ve visited this park so many times in my life and there’s always a new path to explore. Masks are mandatory these days, and since COVID has been keeping us all inside, it’s always nice to go out and get some fresh air.

I have always loved portrait work and capturing life in a shot. I enjoy both capturing everyday life in candid photos, as well as planned out shoots. In this specific portrait, I photographed a close friend of mine and my overall intention was to focus on her, rather than what was directly in the background, but still getting the feel of where we were and.

This photo was taken at Franconia Sculpture Park, where she was standing in front of a mirror which was reflecting the sunlight coming from behind. I tend to work with lighting a lot especially with my portrait work, and focus a lot on the shadows and highlights of the face, which is my way of portraying certain feelings and/or emotions. In this photo, I wanted to portray the feeling of longing and a sort of solitude.

Couple in a Waterfall

Inkjet Print

I wanted to show who I was as an artist. I’ve always enjoyed photography while also being a huge fan of movies, I wanted the piece to seem like a scene from a movie. Movies have an incredible way of telling a story, they show the viewers a piece of the world that they may never see without cinema. Film shows people the horrors of the world and opens their eyes to different lives than their own. When I saw this couple standing under the waterfall with the water running down their backs, it felt like a coming of age movie and I knew I had to capture the moment. I wanted to show the world that movie scenes aren’t always fictional and can be real moments, it may have seemed like a small moment for the people under the waterfall but for me it was like watching two characters blossoming before my own eyes, like a coming of age story.

Distortion

Inkjet Print

For this piece we were instructed to create something that showed us as an artist through the lens. I wanted to play with this idea by literally showing me through the lens of a camera by creating self portraits. I distorted and altered my face as a way to contrast the typical idea of a self portrait and create a photo where you can't exactly tell who or what it is. The art I create does show who I am through the lens, but it's often deceiving and I think this piece accurately depicts that.

The protest on Kroll

Inkjet Print

I created this piece when trying to capture the essence of June 12th. This was when the police union march was starting up and I was able to get some movement. I also took some photos camping because I felt like those were a great response to the pandemic. But then I thought, only the well off could go camping. Some people don’t have cars and others can barely afford to drive , so I thought, show something that was important. And that is this. The idea that people who are just trying to be treated right get called thugs when speaking up makes me think. And that is why I picked this photo.

Grate

With the prompt of how COVID-19 has affected my life, I took two photos in the same location, a subterranean storage space for a loading dock. One is an image of a vent in the concrete wall, the position of the sun created a triangle of light, illuminating small details in the concrete and creating unique shadows. The other image is a self portrait, taken with a timer in the corner across from the vent. The coldness of the setting and isolation of the location were, in my mind, a perfect representation of life in quarantine.

Come Along

Inkjet Print

This image to me invokes a dream like feeling, In the way that the character nearly blends in with the background and just how stunning the green looks, color wise. The light peeks through the leaves very sharply as if you're in a daze. I can relate with the character because I personally love to explore, whether its just in the woods or a new hallway. I feel very calm while being in the woods so I decided to bring this artwork to life because of that.
