Virginia Beach's five main watersheds are the following: Oceanfront, Lynnhaven, Little Creek, Elizabeth River and the Southern Rivers. The largest watershed is the Southern River, encompassing an area of 205 square miles (67% inside city limits). It is comprised of four secondary watersheds-North Landing River, Northwest River, Back Bay, and Small Coastal South.
A watershed is an area of land that drains snowmelt and rainfall to common outlets such as bays, oceans, and reservoirs. Their size range can be anywhere from a comparatively small piece of land to an expanse stretching over thousands of miles long.
