General John J. Pershing was appointed commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and led these American soldiers in World War I.

• The AEF were the first American troops to enter the war.

• Pershing believed in using military tactics that were forceful and offensive.

• Pershing also preferred training inexperienced troops as he was able to turn them into an effective military force.

The Battle of the Argonne Forest is considered the turning point of World War I. The fresh support of the American forces gives the Allies the advantage and the Germans are defeated. Germany signs an armistice ending the war not long after losing in the Argonne.
