All students, PK-12 have district usernames and passwords, just like staff. However, depending on the grade level, the password complexity and the ability to change their own password will differ. As students get older, they have more options available to them for setting up and maintaining their own passwords.
The charts below show the password options for each level.
Elementary (PK-4th)
Ability to reset own password - NO
Password recovery - NO
Complexity = Generated by system
Middle (5-6), Intermediate (7-8), High School (9-12)
Ability to reset own password - Yes
Password recovery - Required
Password must:
Not contain your account name or parts of your full name that exceed two consecutive characters - Be at least eight characters in length and contain characters from three of the following four categories:
English uppercase characters (A through Z)
English lowercase characters (a through z)
Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
Passwords must be unique 5 times before reusing a password
Each campus will need to decide how they want to manage the passwords for both returning students at the beginning of the year and assisting new students throughout the year to set up their accounts.
Students in 8th - 12th should be able to retrieve their own password because the Recovery Option was required in their previous grade.
Students moving from 6th to 7th may or may not have set up the Recovery questions. If not, they will be prompted on first login to do so. Because the password requirements are more complex, students who do not have strong passwords should be encouraged to update their password to meet those requirements.
Students moving from 4th to 5th will now have the option to recover their password and should be encouraged to set up those Recovery questions.
New students will need an initial password created along with password recovery questions, where applicable. At the beginning of the year, most students will have immmediate access to applications.
The process will look a little different for students enrolling during the year. It takes some time for student accounts to get fully set up with access to all the applications they need. Students may be able to set up network accounts right away, but Schoology and Summit Platform accounts, for example, will not be available until the following day. Even though Google accounts may be ready the same day, if the initial password is set up too soon, it will not work with their Google account. Therefore, it is recommended that campuses have an onboarding plan for new students that does not require them to access applications on that first day. Part of that onboarding would be to decide on their password and recovery responses. Grade level appropriate worksheet are provided.
Options for setting up student passwords are discussed on the Password Options page.
