If you are doing well and earning good grades in your current classes, we strongly recommend you consider choosing to take a Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP)/Advanced Placement (AP) course next school year for the academic challenge! Pre-AP and AP courses will help challenge and prepare you for college level classes or trade school while earning premium points. In addition, you have the potential to save money in college by earning college credit while in high school, and you could earn up to $100 for each AP exam you pass with minimum score of a 3 on a 1 to 5 scale.
High school grade points are used by colleges and universities during the admission process to assess a student’s academic achievements and potential. A higher grade point average (GPA) is generally seen as an indicator of strong academic performance.
College Board charges approximately $100 for each exam, however, Pasadena ISD alleviates the cost by covering a large percentage of each exam leaving the student to pay $25 for those that qualify for free and reduced lunch or $40 per exam. This gives our students the opportunity to take a challenging exam while having the potential to earn both high school and college credit, and earn up to $100 for each exam with a passing score of 3 or more.
To support college readiness opportunities, all PISD Advanced Placement (AP) students are registered for exams costing around $100 each, mostly covered by the district. Our AP courses provide a rigorous curriculum that requires extra time and preparation. To support student success, we offer tutoring and academic assistance.
Taking rigorous courses in high school helps students prepare for college success, explore advanced topics, and develop strong study habits.
Advanced coursework builds confidence, improves college admission chances, and can lead to awards and scholarships.
Some courses offer opportunities for college credit, tuition savings, and flexibility in future college course selection.
DISTRICT AND CAMPUS EXPECTATIONS
Commit to developing great habits like staying on task, asking questions in class, attending tutorials regularly, and forming study groups. Reading and writing are an integral part of the class, which will require you to study and complete assignments outside of class hours (approximately 45 minutes per class per day). You will also be required to have good attendance, submit assignments on time, monitor your grade (completion does not equal mastery), and communicate regularly with your instructor about your progress to be successful in the course. The required AP exam and course will be rigorous, so you will earn premium GPA points for taking an advanced class. (Pre-AP/AP)
Commit to staying in the challenging advanced course for at least six weeks and giving your best determined efforts. Discuss drop options and requirements (attend 3 tutorial sessions) with your advanced teacher prior to requesting an exit form from your teacher. (Pre-AP/AP)
