Persuasive Writing

Persuasive writing can take many forms. It can be a speech, an essay, an advertisement, a letter, just to name a few. You use persuasive language and techniques any time you need to argue a point of view. Whenever an idea needs to be explained and reasons given for why it is true, you are writing a persuasive text.

There are some key elements you should ALWAYS use in your persuasive writing:

Begin with an INTRODUCTION . State what side you are on regarding the topic you have to write about. Do you agree or disagree? Is it a true statement or misleading? State simply your reasons why you believe in your response.
Use PARAGRAPHS. Each point should have a NEW paragraph. State your idea, explain it and support it with an example.
A concluding statement. Sum up your ideas at the end.

ELABORATE on your ideas. This means to fully explain your point BEFORE you give an example. Think to yourself after you have written your idea , "IN OTHER WORDS', and explain your idea further. Use SYNONYMS and other words to express the concept.

How to Elaborate:

State your idea/ point in a clear sentence.
Explain this further by writing it again using a phrase like ‘in other words’ to expand your explanation. Use phrases such as:

3. Expand further by using ‘Because’ to fully explain your understanding

4. Add your evidence/ example. "An example of this is when...."

Other points to remember:

Use complex sentences. Complex sentences have more than 1 idea in the same sentence. You can use commas and connectives to have more than one idea in your sentences.
