INSET Day - 28th November

Rosie Jordan - Chessbrook

(Roots and Fruits Handout)

Rosi Jordan is a SLE (behaviour & discipline) and Deputy Headteacher at Chessbrook Education Support Centre. Emma is a Leader in Learning (Extended Roll) at Chessbrook and, on Rosi's retirement at the end of this academic year, will take over the management of Extended Roll. Emma spent 13 years working at Francis Combe Academy and is highly skilled at motivating reluctant learners. During this session Rosi will share her extensive experience of working with more reluctant learners. She will lead discussions about how we can help these students start to engage in their learning and support them in building self-esteem and confidence in your subject.

Robin Launder - The Behaviour Buddy

Learning is memory – or to put it another way, if what we teach doesn’t enter the long-term memory of our students then actually we haven’t taught them anything. So, then, how can we hack the memory process so that learning (and progress, achievement and better grades) can happen? This session will show you how. It will give you the up-to-date neuroscience (in very manageable and memorable chunks) and link that neuroscience to specific teaching approaches and strategies.

Andrew Jones - The Reach Free School

Andrew Jones is Assistant Headteacher for CPD and Professional Mentoring at The Reach Free School, a Specialist Leader of Education and a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching. Low stakes testing helps teachers to identify the topics which may need revisiting, and the pupils who may need support in specific areas. In this session we will explore the design, implementation, impact and pitfalls of low stakes testing, in order to give teachers the tools through which they can run effective low stakes tests in their classrooms.

Garry Power - St Michael's School

Garry Power is Deputy Headteacher at St. Michael’s. Following a study in SW Hertfordshire on raising achievement amongst African–Caribbean students, this session focuses on those approaches that schools considered to be effective. Statistically, BME students at Parmiter’s have achieved well at GCSE (our 2019 data included 16 students, who achieved a Progress 8 score above the cohort average). However, as our current cohorts move through the school achievement of BME students may be something we need to focus on.

Jacob Allen - Parmiter's School

Jacob is one of our excellent Computer Science teachers. During this session he will teach you how to use Google Forms. You may recall the briefing session where Jonathan Tyack demonstrated how he has used Google Forms as part of Music homework at KS3. If you think they might be a tool you would use in your subject, come along and learn how to use them.

Mike Garvey - St Clement Danes School

Mike Garvey is an Assistant Headteacher at St. Clement Danes. Having previously been Director of Sixth Form Studies, his role now includes Lead Professional for Teaching and Learning, Standards and Continuing Professional Development. Clement Danes have taught their A Level courses over 9 hours per fortnight for a number of years, hence have experience of successfully delivering courses in the time frames we are now working with. Mike’s session will touch on a range of areas that contribute to successful teaching & learning at A Level, for example interleaved learning, independent learning and metacognition strategies, as well as an overview of John Hattie’s research.
