The theme of The Summer I Turned Pretty, by Jenny Han, is you shouldn't mess with people's feelings
This is true because, Belly says, “You're the only boy I've ever thought about my whole life, it's always been you, you taught me everything” to Conrad.
she also said, “Everyone else is saltines even Cam and I hate saltines.” Belly confessed her feelings to someone else.
This is bad because Belly doesn't care about Cam at the moment and tells Conrad all she feels about him. After that belly stopped answering Cam's calls cause she didn't want to hurt or break up with him. She is messing with Cam's feelings because she still wants Conrad and is dating him at the same time. Cam figured out that she didn't want to call him so he called one last time to see if she still had any feelings for him or if she would want to hang out with him
After she confessed, Cam said, “Hey it's Cam, I want to see you but if not it was nice hanging out with you” he never called again because Belly didn't answer. Therefore they never hung out again.
If Belly had confessed her feelings to Conrad at the beginning she wouldn't have dated Cam for so long and then got attached just to get hurt again. This proves my theme that you shouldn't mess with people's feelings.
This is true because Belly says “You're the only boy I've ever thought about my whole life it's always been you, you taught me everything” to Conrad.
She confesses her feelings to Conrad. He doesn't say anything like yes or no. He calls her and says he wants to see her. They meet up and get very close acting like a couple. So she gets rewarded by having a love relationship with Conrad. She messed with Conrad's feelings for a while even though she could have told him at the beginning.
On page 272, Conrad says, “Are you still coming with me? Of course I was coming with him there is just us, every summer until now has led up to this” If she didn't confess her feelings then Conrad wouldn't know she likes him and he would be too scared to make a move. She has a good relationship with Conrad because she told him how she feels and he knows she likes him. If she hadn't messed with Conrad's feelings by dating Cam she could have been dating Conrad for a while. In conclusion, The theme of The Summer I Turned Pretty, by Jenny Han, is you shouldn't mess with people's feelings. This applies to every single love that you have in the real world.
