Q starts his day off late, grabs his cereal, and gets in the car. Once at school, he finds his friends, they are talking about prom, which Q says he doesn't want to go to prom, but he does and doesn't want to tell his friends. While Ben was trying to get a plan to get a date, Q was staring at Margo who he says is awesome. Then we get introduced to Radar, another friend of Q. They talk about prom, Then it's time to go to lunch. At lunch, they spot Angela, radar’s girlfriend. She asks why Radar hasn’t taken her to his house to hang out., they say his parents are overprotective, but in reality, they hold a suspicious world record. When Q is sleeping that night, he hears tapping at the window. It's Margo; who hasn't been at that window for years. She tells Q to come with her, and then the adventure starts.
Margo and Q first go to the store to get their supplies. Their list was: 3 whole catfish, a shaver, vaseline, a Mountain Dew six-pack, one dozen tulips one bottle of water, tissues, and one can of blue spray paint. They head to Walmart to pick up the club, which stops the steering wheel in a car to stop turning. Then, it was time for part 2. They went to Becca’s house, put the club on the steering wheel of her car, and then went inside the house., put a fish in her closet, spray-painted her desk, and left.
They start off with part six: leaving an apologetic note for her friend Karin. Margo said lots of rude things to Karin and she wants to take them back. So Q delivers the note along with a bouquet of flowers. After that it's part seven: leave a fish for Jase. once they got to his house, they shattered the window, but the sirens started to go off. They continued on though. They threw the fish in the house, spray-painted Margo’s signature “M” on the side of the house, and left. Next went to the asparagus skyscraper and looked at their work. This is when they realize that their whole life looks perfect from above, but there's actually rust, weeds, and cracked paint.
It was time for part 10, it was Q’s turn to pick a victim. He picked Chuck because of all those times he picked on him. So they floored it to Chuck’s house. Once they got there, the window to his room was open. So they climbed in through the window. Once they got in there, they put shaving cream on his eyebrow. Then they spread out and put Vaseline on every doorknob in the house. Then they shave off his eyebrow. Then, part 11, Break into SeaWorld. At first, Q does not cooperate, but he eventually gives in and they create a plan and start to break in. once they're in, a security guard finds them, but margo bribes the guard into letting them go. After they break in, they head home, and Q and margo go to bed.
When Q got to school, he wanted to see Margo, but she wasn’t there. When he headed into his first class he was so tired from last night that he decided to skip class the rest of the day. By the time they got home, Margo's minivan wasn't in their driveway. Q assumed that she just went on another adventure. She wasn't even gone for a day before rumors start. And when she leaves bad things happen. Chuck and some of his friends do pranks on freshmen.
When Q woke up, he went downstairs to see a detective along with his parents and Margo’s parents sitting at the dining room table. And they started questioning Q about the other night. he came up with lies to avoid getting into trouble. Then the detective went to speak with Q privately. He tried to make Q confess what he did but he didn't. Then the detective left and placed a poster that would be helpful later on.
Q, Ben, and Radar went into Margo's house, then her room, and then started looking around. They found a record of the guy on the poster, and in pen, it said “Walt Whitman’s niece”, and it was circled. Walt Whitman was a poet, so they started looking for his work and they found a piece where Margo highlighted specific words. But Q didn't understand what it was saying and spent the entire weekend looking at it.
At school, Q thought about nothing but the poem. so when he got home, he read it again, and the only thing he found was the phrase: "Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!" So Q gathered Ben and Radar and stepped into the Speigleman's house, got some screwdrivers, and started at the door. Radar looked up how to unscrew the doors. once they got it open, they were left disappointed.
The next day, Ben called Q just to talk about prom and shopping for things. Then Q stopped him. He was jealous that he didn't have a prom date. once he got off the phone he read the poem one more time. Then it finally hit him, the poem was talking about his doors. he opened his door and sure enough, there was a note with an address on it. so the next morning, he faked being sick and when they left, he put the door back in place and headed to the address with his friends.
Q is heading to a pseudovision, (an abandoned town) to look for Margo. He found nothing though. Then, he went back to the minimal and went inside. One of the desks was special. The calendar said June 1986 instead of February 1986. (which was when the mall was supposedly abandoned.) Then, he found something that had been used during their all-nighter. Margo had been there.
Q's phone rang when he woke up from sleeping at the mini-mall, he answered it and It was Ben. he was drunk at Becca's house. So Q had to take him and Lacey home. Then, Radar came to Q's house to talk about the new discoveries on Margo.
Q skipped school again with only a week until the finals to read the poem. then when Ben, Radar, and Lacey71 were all there, they headed to the mini-mall. But while they were exploring, they heard someone in there with them. and it was very unusual because the building had been abandoned for years. But they soon found out that it was Gus. They were also exploring the minimal. Except Ben scared them off.
Q found a clue that said she could be at another pseudovision. So the next morning, he lied again and headed to Collier farms. But Margo wasn't there. Q was really disappointed, so he went to Ben and Radar's party. He left right before midnight which was curfew.
Q figured that Margo was in New York because she ha been clueing that for a while. they also figured that she would be back by graduation day because the amount of days to travel from New York to Orlando was the amount of days until graduation day. Q's mom gave him a Ford minivan with grduation coming up. Margo had left clues that she had been alive. And then they set off to New York.
