Students who receive their small group replacement reading instruction in the learning support room will be working with the SRA Reading Mastery Program. In addition, the Wonders Language Arts program will be used to expose students to a variety of literature, vocabulary, phonics skills, and reading strategies. This program is literature based and structured around 6 unit themes. Each unit/theme lasts approximately 5 weeks and focuses on different reading skills and strategies.
Writing instruction within the special education setting parallels the fourth and fifth grade Wonders curriculum. Students receive small group instruction and support throughout the entire writing process. Each assignment is graded based on the 7 writing traits, which include: Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Conventions, Sentence Fluency, and Presentation. Students will complete a total of 12 essays over the course of the school year. We will focus on a different genre of writing during each unit of Wonders.
Unit 1: Narrative
Unit 2: Explanatory
Unit 3: Opinion
Unit 4: Fiction (narrative and poetry)
