Reading - Mrs. Moore
Independent Reading Skills: There is a strong emphasis on building independent readers through developing the following skills:
Developing reading preferences
Successfully selecting books on their own
Planning reading that challenges them
Committing to and finishing books.
Participating in our reading community.
I help your kids build stronger skills no matter where they are in the process.
They will always have an independent book (we take care of that at school) and get 20-30 minutes to read in class.
6th Grade Reading Skills:
Fiction skills:
Tackling tricky texts with confusing connotation or figurative language.
Making inferences about the author's meaning.
Using plot elements and character develop to spot the author's intended theme.
Non-fiction skills:
Tackling tricky texts with tough technical or figurative language.
Using text structure to identify the author's main idea and summarize.
Making inferences about the author's perspective.
Identifying and evaluating an author's argument and evidence.
Blended, Self-paced, Proficiency Based Classroom: When it comes to tackling reading standards and skills, I use the following to meet each student where they are:
Blended means content is presented through videos I create. Students can follow along at their own pace, re-watch, and keep up from home when needed. This also allows me more time to conference one on one with each of your students, so I can meet their unique needs.
Self-paced means students control the pace of their learning. No one left behind or held back. If they need more time and support, they get it. If they need a challenge, they get it!
Proficiency based grading means students progress from one lesson to the next when they demonstrate proficiency. I provide tons of guidance and feedback for kids who are still reaching for proficiency.
