Parker UMC's Scholarship Endowment
Over the past 11 years, we have given out 68 scholarships to our graduating high school seniors, scholarships totaling $46,000. In preparation for Sunday worship, here are questions to consider ahead of time. You can use these in your own devotion time, in conversation with family and friends, or in a small group setting. All are welcome to join one discussion group every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Room 216 in the church.
We hope this practice will help you engage with the scriptural texts and sermon at a deeper faith level.
For March 15 worship:
This week's sermon: The Good News is . . . Protection and Care for the Vulnerable
Scripture: Matthew 19:13-15; Deuteronomy 24:17-22
Guiding Questions:
This week we reflect on how the good news is hope for the vulnerable. Our first reading is from Matthew 19:13-15 where Jesus blesses the children. Compare this passage with other accounts: Mark 9:36-37, Matthew 18:1-5, Mark 10:13-16. What do you think Jesus is teaching the disciples and us? How do children bring gifts to our church and to our world?
How are children vulnerable in our world? What might be our call as a church to do or to respond to this?
Deuteronomy 24:17-22 plays an important role for the Hebrew people. When you read these commands, what is your first response? How might these commandments been received in the original community?
In our current reality, discussion around immigrants, which is what aliens refers to in Deuteronomy, is heightened and polarized. How might you read these passages in light of our current culture? What arguments or concerns in today's conversations are not reflected in this passage?
How might our church read these passages in Deuteronomy? What are some practical ways we might offer protection and care for the vulnerable?
Please join us this Sunday as we continue our sermon series, The Good New Is.... This Sunday's message is Protection and Care for the Vulnerable and our scripture readings are Matthew 19:13-15; Deuteronomy 24:17-22.
9 a.m. Sunday: Blended service with traditional elements and a variety of music including hymns, handbells and choir.
10:30 a.m. Spark! Worship: This service includes contemporary praise music, and an informal style that offers a play area for children, opportunities for you to be involved in service, and the freedom to practice prayer and worship in exciting and personalized ways.
5:30 p.m. 2nd Wednesday of each month: At The Table. We gather around a meal, share conversation and stories of faith, and complete a small mission project.
All requests to add an item to the Midweek should be emailed to Pastor Laura by 6 p.m. on Monday evening.
