School Counseling Overview

Counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self management and social skills, who understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period. The program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success (ASCA, 2019).

Mission Statement

The mission of South Park's counseling department is to advocate for all learners. Through participation in the data-driven school counseling program, all students will develop long-term self-directed, realistic, and responsible decision-making skills, as well as grow consistent attitudes and behaviors that will help them to achieve their future goals.

Stephanie Hatch, MA 6th - 12th Counselor

Welcome to our 2021-2022 school year! This is my second year as the middle school counselor. I originally began teaching in Preschool then moved throughout the various grades including kindergarten, first, and fifth. Most recently I taught 5th grade and am excited to continue to work with many of the students I have previously taught! I believe all students can be successful when they set goals and identify strengths. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or comments. I will do my very best to listen, hear, and help in any way that I can. I look forward to a great year together!

Why would a student see a school counselor?

*Academic/Educational Counseling*

Students sometimes have academic problems in areas including study habits, expectations, time management, organizational skills, and the level of the curriculum. A counselor may assist students in exploring solutions to these and other academic problems.

*Personal/Social Counseling*

A counselor may assist students to develop skills to interact more effectively with others, identify personal values, talents and interests and transition into and out of middle school. The counselor will also provide support and assistance to students and families in crisis and can provide referrals to outside agencies for more resources.

*Career/Vocational Counseling*

A counselor may assist students in the early stages of career exploration.
