Criminal background checks are required for volunteers who may have unsupervised contact with students (Tier III Volunteers only). The conviction of a crime (felony or misdemeanor) will not automatically disqualify a person from volunteering in a school. Each situation will be considered individually. Completed forms are maintained in a confidential manner at the district office.
Volunteers whose prior history, including but not limited to criminal history, demonstrates a risk to the safety or well being of students will be denied participation in volunteer activities involving students.
Volunteers subject to the application process or the criminal background/fingerprinting process and DFS Central Registry Screening shall immediately notify a school administrator upon any conviction of a felony or misdemeanor other than a minor traffic violation. The privilege of volunteering may be revoked from any individual at any time.
Volunteers may not begin until they have been cleared. This requirement to conduct a criminal background check for volunteers is covered by District Policy IICB, Volunteers-Community Resource Persons
To ensure that the criminal checks are completed, schools must follow this process.
All community and parent volunteers need to complete the Volunteer Application.
Tier III Volunteers also need to fill out the DFS Background Check Form.
All information on the application is sensitive and will be maintained in a confidential manner. Parents who have concerns about confidentiality may complete and return a paper copy of the volunteer background check form to Human Resources.
Human Resources will conduct the criminal records search and add cleared volunteers to the database.
Human Resources will inform the Superintendent of any individual whose criminal records check or criminal background check application contains questionable information. The Superintendent will determine whether the offense relates directly to the capability or suitability of the volunteer to work in the school. Human Resources will consult with the school Principal once clearance has been received. Human Resources will let the school secretaries and Principal know when clearance has been received and volunteering may begin. The local school from which the application was received will notify the volunteer when clearance has been given.
An individual who disagrees with any decisions regarding their status as a volunteer that results from the criminal background check may appeal that decision to Chynna Singer, Director of Human Resources (307.587.1193 chynnasinger@park6.org).
