These hubs are local community networks focussed on coordination of local male suicide prevention support. Members are local organisations and individuals (professionals and otherwise) who provide support that is either directly or indirectly related to male suicide prevention, particularly that related to family and relationship breakdown.
Why this focus? Because males make up over 75% of all suicide in Australia and most male suicide relates specifically to family and relationship breakdown; also because, traditional mental health strategies have not been historically successful preventing suicide in this demographic.
These hubs are designed to reduce the targeted incidence of local suicide and emerge in part from the Australian Governments NSPLSP program through the Department of Health and Aged Care. Rock Solid Networks founding member, Parents Beyond Breakup is one of 30+ organizations tasked by the Australian Government to reduce suicide in targeted demographics.
Hubs meet online via Zoom (or in-person) every 2 months or more frequently as needed.
New members need only register for the next local Zoom meeting to join in and you'll be welcoming at the start of that meeting.
There is no cost or criteria outside of (a) you provide support to the area in question and (b) the support is directly or indirectly related to male suicide prevention.
If you provide local support that is directly or indirectly designed to reduce suicide, especially in males facing relationship or family issues, then you should be a member of a local hub. Typical members might include:
GP's, psychologists, psychiatrists, other mental health workers
Family lawyers, barristers, legal aid, court staff and court experts
Social workers
Police, law enforcement, prison services
Mediators
Suicide prevention workers / volunteers
Educators
Major employer representatives (e.g. HR in heavy and other male centric industries)
The original need emerged from a problem faced by national suicide prevention charity, Parents Beyond Breakup, finding local referral services in Kalgoorlie (WA) to help set up a new peer support group.
A social work post graduate student from Edith Cowan University was tasked with researching how local services could be made to work together more effectively to improve outcomes for local people. Conducting extensive desk and direct community research, a need for a local community hub was identified, to better coordinate local support. That hub would need to be easy to join, participate in and be free of charge - the Rock Solid Networks Kalgoorlie hub was born April 2025.
Despite it being a joint venture between Parents Beyond Breakup and Edith Cowan University, these hubs are designed to be community led once they are established. On an ongoing basis, they will be collectively managed by revolving leadership drawn from local support services.
