READING EXPECTATIONS
Participation in summer reading is strongly encouraged and expected for all middle and high school students. All English/Language Arts Teachers assess students' summer reading participation during the first few days of school through class discussions and writing assignments. Summer reading activities vary by grade level. Look for your respective grade level below for detailed explanations of summer reading expectations.
Middle School Expectations
Grades 5 - 8
All middle school students will choose how they engage with reading over the summer break. In September, students will participate in community-building discussions within their respective ELA classes.
Requirements:
Read at least four books of your choice and write down quick bullet points to refresh your memory in September.

After reading at least four books, play READO! (⬅️Click the link and make a copy to play)
Discussions on summer reading topics will be assessed using this standards-based rubric.
High School expectations
Grades 9 - 12 (College Prep & Honors)
All College Prep and Honors students will read one (1) book and one (1) additional type of digital media. In September, students will engage in community-building discussions within their respective ELA classes.
Requirements:
Read at least one (1) book and one (1) other type of digital media (i.e. show, movie, musical album, podcast)
Prepare for small group in-class discussions by bringing in two (2) direct quotes from each text to use during the discussions
Discussions count as an initial participation grade for the year and informs teacher recommendations for Honors and AP classes.
AP high school expectations
Grades 9 - 12
All AP students will complete their designated summer assignments per their teacher's instructions.
