The Wellness Program is a comprehensive curriculum for grades 9 through 12. The curriculum structure is designed to integrate the learning experiences inherent in our health education, physical education, safety education and family and consumer science learning programs.

The primary goal of the Wellness Program is to provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge and experiences necessary to develop attitudes and practices to make informed decisions that will help them develop and maintain good health practices while living safely in a constantly changing environment.

The successful completion of the Wellness Program is a graduation requirement for all students. As a significant part of the Wellness Program’s Core Curriculum, the successful completion of all health and physical education units is critical to meeting the above requirement. The New Jersey Department of Education requires all students to participate in and pass a Physical Education and Health class for each year of high school enrollment.

Physical Education 9

Introduction to Wellness & Physical Education

The goal of Physical Education is to provide students with an opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Students will explore their own levels of physical fitness while gaining the knowledge to identify and improve each of the different health-related components of fitness. Students will participate in a variety of physical activities and games with an emphasis on learning the rules and developing positive sportsmanship behaviors. Skill tests, written tests, and assessments are used to measure learning. Active participation by the students is a major objective of the physical education program. Our students are participants, not spectators!

Health 9

The course of study includes emotional and physical health, sociological health, and environmental health. The class helps students to develop knowledge about healthy lifestyles. Students learn to make decisions about lifestyles and to develop values, attitudes and competencies, which create a positive impact upon their future. The curriculum provides educational experiences and gives facts and scientific knowledge upon which optimum healthful living is based. The family living unit topics include physical development, social development, reproductive anatomy and contraception. Students are graded as in all academic classes; the marking period grade also serves as the student’s final grade. Tests, quizzes, small group projects, and readings are assigned in this course.
