Suicide prevention depends upon appropriate identification and screening. Mr. Lesser discusses and provides training in a gold-standard, innovative suicide risk screening tool, the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). The C-SSRS is a simple, evidence-based tool proven to detect an individual’s suicide risk that is used in communities and settings around the world by providers, first responders, school staff, military personnel, soldiers/peers, policymakers, clergy and community members. Due to its demonstrated ability to predict suicidal behavior and guidance for next steps it positively impacts service utilization through decreasing unnecessary interventions, redirecting scarce resources and expediting care delivery to those at highest risk. Adopted by the CDC, this screen can be delivered by all gatekeepers, enabling blanket coverage and linking of systems, fostering prevention.

ESS partners with school districts to help them implement culturally inclusive mental health programs that improve care, strengthen outcomes, and maintain students in-district. As the 2021-2022 school year approaches, districts are making decisions about whether school will be in-person, virtual, or offered in a hybrid approach. Regardless of which option districts choose, they will be confronted with the reality that the COVID-19 pandemic has had (and continues to have) a profound impact on student mental health. It’s vital that districts put a flexible safety net in place to support this foundational element of every student’s education and overall well-being. Because every child deserves to reach their full potential.

Helpful Handouts & ESS Presentations:
Our School-Based Program directly meets the evolving and growing needs of our local school districts. Our school-based therapists provide intensive onsite support for elementary schools through high schools in order to assist the most vulnerable students, while also enhancing each school's ability to meet the social and emotional needs of all their students. Our school-based therapists specialize in helping students with depression, anxiety, school refusal, behavioral problems, and trauma-related needs. Services range from intensive individual counseling, family therapy, group therapy, school clearances, parent and professional development workshops, and district-wide social and emotional services. Developing strong collaborative relationships with our partnering schools, allows our school-based programs to be unique in meeting each school district's vision.

Thrive’s school-based counseling services are designed to help students with a variety of mental health concerns. In particular, we specialize in treating depression, anxiety disorders, school phobia and avoidance, suicide risks, and behavioral problems. Our mental health counseling services include helping to manage family interventions and facilitate the home/school connection — critical components that overburdened school districts lack the resources and experience to handle on their own. Our training, coaching, and professional development services enable teachers and child study team members to learn how to address the SEL and mental health needs of their students and staff.
