Policy Statement
Submitting text that has been generated by AI is not writing; it is plagiarism. As such, its use directly contradicts the purpose and value of a writing-based liberal education. Improper usage of machine learning and generative artificial intelligence is antithetical to the skills and values that are cornerstone to liberal arts education, such as critical thinking, close reading, creative writing, and ethical scholarship. Moreover, such improper usage undermines the value of the personalized education provided by the University and compromises the security of the data of the University.
Usage by Students
Unless otherwise directed by the instructor of their course, students may not submit to their instructor any content, whether visual, multimedia, computational, or verbal, that was generated by artificial intelligence. Generative artificial intelligence may only be used in assignments and activities for which the instructor has stated that such usage is permitted, and only in the manner specified by the instructor. Any improper usage of these technologies as defined in this paragraph may be regarded as a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy of the University.
Usage by Faculty
Faculty may not input work submitted by students, in any format or medium, into a machine learning or generative artificial intelligence website, software, or algorithm, except for the academic integrity software that is licensed for usage by the University. Such inputting may be regarded as a violation of the Identity Protection and Data Management Policy of the University.
Under no circumstances may faculty furnish text that was generated by artificial intelligence as feedback to students. Faculty may not use machine learning or generative artificial intelligence to determine the numerical values of grades awarded to students. Any improper usage of these technologies as defined in this paragraph may be regarded as a violation of the Personalized Education Policy of the University.
