My first project this year was my photography project. With this project I originally wanted to create a magazine where the focus is mostly on clothes and fashion but that soon changed as I changed my mind. One thing I noticed while the photoshoot was in progress is that people have fun while getting their pictures taken and it makes them feel good about themselves. When they look back at their photos they get a feeling that is indescribable. So I just wanted to do portrait photos of people who I think are great to give them a confidence boost and a little representation. I had fun doing this because for me it’s like a game trying to make things look good. Since it was my first time doing photography with a professional camera my friend helped with the technical aspects of using the camera and getting the best angles while also following my vision.
My second project was two short films that I edited. “The women In the Mirror '' and “Who Did It” I worked alongside my video production classmates. I worked as the editor for the ‘Women in the mirror” for the first time ever. I learned many things about filmmaking while working on this project in the all american film festival. I learned more about the technical aspects of editing and Premier Pro editing software. Which came in handy when working on “Who Did It?” since I had to edit the fastest I possibly could as I only had four and a half hours to edit the entire film.
My final project was a documentary on the PAHS Choir. This was my favorite to create because I love the entire community of choir at the school and it has been an impactful part of my highschool career. Also my favorite genre of films are documentaries so I had a blast creating this. I had the most trouble filming b-roll. Because I hadn't done it before I wasn’t aware it required a tripod, without it the finished product would not transition as smoothly. Somethin else I had trouble with was setting up the interviews. It was difficult because the majority of people are busy and things in school move on extremely fast. So that is why some clips of the previous video were hand held and in different rooms.
I’m a little unsatisfied with the things I was able to create since really it was my only year that I was able to make content. I was pretty much a beginner at the whole thing and I feel like now that the year is coming to an end I’m only just honing into the skills I’ve learned. If I could go back in time I would try to be less busy and set aside more of my time to be more creative.
All American High School Film Festival - New York, "My Favorite Experience"
The All American High School Film Festival is a contest held in New York City where students from around the world can experience the hands on filmmaking process.
Ten talented Video Production students from Perth Amboy's High School Communication Academy were selected to be a part of the full experience! I happened to be one of them!
Long story short, we had three days to record and edit a short film. Looking back I'm still in awe of how we successfully completed the film. I remember being very excited while we walked around the streets of New York City seeing all the buildings and people. I've always heard of the phrase "The city that never sleeps" and after this experience I understood why the city is so hyped up.
My job was to piece all the scenes together. The job of the editor can be a stressful role because it require close attention to detail. For example, there can be a small part in a singular clip that causes obvious plot holes, learning how to work around certain things like this is crucial. It also requires sitting for long periods of time and close contact with a screen. Rewatching the same thing for hours gets tiring but the rewarding feeling of the final product is like no other. This will remain a special experience for me because not only did we create a film in one of the most popular cities in the country, but I also enjoyed the time spent with the team and the bond that grew out of this one filmmaking experience!
Songwriting and singing are some of my hobbies that I'm very passionate about. So I wanted to attempt to write and record an original song for the first time. With "Coffee and You", my intent, during the early stages of the song, was to just explore my voice and what type of sound I had to develop. I had a bit of trouble when figuring out what to say with this song. I found myself holding myself back with what I wanted to say. Eventually when I organized my thoughts and allowed myself to express what I felt, only then did it flow a bit more naturally.
Recording my vocals was a fun process and I enjoyed coming up with melodies, harmonies, and riffs. It is a very tedious process but definitely worth it. It is not professional or perfect in any way but it is definitely something I'm proud of because it is different and I dedicated a lot to it!
This song is your traditional simple romance song. The story is about suddenly finding a person who makes life better. It is an unusual feeling because it doesn't always happen but when it does one changes in every way. There is a line where I change point of views. Sometimes things seem too good to be true but the line affirms that the feeling is mutual and truthful because this person holds all the qualities that makes them happy. Again the person expresses how mundane everything is without that person to make everything better. The last few lines express that this person has tried to avoid relationships but this time they will trust someone again once more.
"Who Did It?" It is the result of the Jackson High 3 - minute film challenge. Participants are given a prompt, prop, and character name that needs to be included in the film. In the span of 5 days students would write a script, film, and edit. Students themselves pick their crew and teammates and choose what role to fulfill. The task is easier said than done. We took two days to come up with a script, the third and fourth day we only filmed scene 2 and 4 which required all indoor shots. On day 5 (submission day) luckily the weather was perfect, we had to cram in scenes 1 and 3 and final editing because the weather the previous days held us back. It took us up till the sixth period to finish filming and the rest of the day I edited and submitted the film. It was a very stressful task but the final product felt great!
